Gerber Shard coating
on: June 22, 2010, 07:51:39 AM
Gerber says the Shard has a "Titanium nitride coating for corrosion resistance." Is that true. I thought it was just black paint. Either way, it's pretty bad right. That's why people are sanding it off. I have a MT.O one coming and I am trying to figure out a way to take off the coating but not the MT.O branding.

I thought it was paint as well

I'm guessing if they'd been produced in just plain metal we would all be duracoating them and the like right now.

Perhaps a case of familiarity breeds contempt?  I'd leave it as is for the time being.  You can always take the black stuff off later if you really don't like it but it'll be a swine to stick it back on :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I'm assuming the Shard and Artifact have the same coating. I must say, I rather like the battle scars on my Artifact. It shows character.  ;)

This MT.O Shard has been on the keyring most of the time since I got it. It has also spent four or five hours in the case vibrator. It is smooth to the touch and has a nice worn look to it

A case vibrator (tumbler) is used in case preparation in reloading metallic cartridges. It uses vibrations  instead of rotary tumbling to move the media around the case to clean them.

I've had the Shard on my keychain about a week or so now and it has scuffed up quite nicely  :tu:  It seems to be almost like a powder coat in that it doesn't chip like normal paint.  Has anyone else noticed this?
