G96 The Fisherman 2030 Filleting knife
on: August 25, 2010, 11:23:56 AM
A couple of days ago i bought this G96 filleting knife from the unsold stock of a long gone knife & fishing shop.
It is still like new and the edge for the most part was still able to shave hair on skin level, but after i gave it a few passes on the polishing paper wheel it can also whittle hair easily.
The steel is very hard, harder than Globals and Kai Shuns, and the thin & flexible blade sings while being polished.
The handle looks and feels a bit cheap but handles well, and the sheath is also functional.

Specs:

Steel: unknown stainless
Hardness: most likely harder than 60 HRC
Overall length: 12,6 inch (32,0 cm)
Blade length: 7,8 inch (19,8 cm)
Length cutting edge: 7,4 inch (18,9 cm)
Blade thickness: max 1,5 mm
Weight without sheath: 135 grams
Weight with sheath: 202 grams

Yeah I like it.  The handle almost looks as though it has a gel texture?  I would imagine it's
hard though huh?

Yes, the handle is made of translucent hard plastic.

I also posted the pics on Bladeforums and about an hour later i got a mail from an Australian fisherman who wanted to know if i would sell the knife to him.
He knew about the steel quality of these particular filleting knives, and he joined Bladeforums just to acquire one.
Since i have no intention of selling it, i pointed him to http://www.seamountknifeworks.com/index.htm
It's the website of Phil Wilson who probably makes the best filleting knives in the world, and is also a revered steel guru.
One day i hope to buy a knife from him as well,

Neat story, thanks for the link, had a look at his website.  Nice knives.  Hopefully the fella
who joined blade forums just for this particular knife is successful. :tu:
