What oil to you use for your Knife/Tool?
on: January 11, 2011, 07:38:36 AM
Hi,

I was just wondering what oil people aree using on there knives and MT's to keep them lubricated and resistant to corroision?

My little spyderco bug which has only been on my keys for a months is already showing signs of rust - I often have wet hands when I touch my keys so my bug gets a little damp and even just this little bit of moisture and its rusting.

The bug is going to be made redundant and now im going to have to fund a better quality keychain knife.

Im not sure of using vegitable oil was going to be ok for the little bug  :-[ but I didnt have anything else so I oiled it up with that.

what do you use?

Thanks

I think vegetable oil gets gummed up after a while.
Most people here use some sort of gun oil, or a similar lubrication oil (3 in 1, etc').
And if you want a food safe substance, many people would recommend mineral oil.
And then there's the endless debate about WD-40, but lets not go there  :D

I have used a product called inox, it is a food grade lubricant. I have used it for awhile & I am more than happy with it.I buy it in one of those unpressurised pump bottles & then I use a small syringe from work with a blunt needle too draw up a couple of mls & then deliver the lubricant in a more accurate & economical way than the bottles spray applicator. :tu:

+1 for mineral oil--an inexpensive, food-safe option.

I use Nano-oil for the really sticky ones.

INOX is mineral oil, with a penetrating compound added.  You can save yourself a lot of money by going to the local pharmacy and buying it by the jug for about the same (or less!) than you buy a tiny bottle of INOX for.

I stay away from liquid lubes nowadays unless I really need them.  Liquid traps gunk inside itself then when it dries said gunk stays in the pivot point, eventually building up with other gunk until the whole mess is rammed in there but good and makes opening/closing difficult.

I use the oil that victorinox sells, which I think is just plain mineral oil, and ballistol.

You should be able to buy it in any pharmacy or grocery store.  Mineral oil is a basic laxative and is rarely dressed up with fancy brands or packaging.  Look for a plain clear plastic jug with an even plainer label.

Baby oil is the same thing, but usually has some kind of scent or other things added to it, so I would avoid it if I were you.

A rub with marine tuff cloth will prevent a blade from rusting.

I like WD-40, but just about any light lube is groovy.  Leatherman recommends WD-40 as well on its website.

I am a fan of WD40 as well lately i have been trying mineral oil so far i have to say i am in pressed i just wonder how well it protects against rust. It sure polishes Vic scales well. Years ago we did a corrosion test we tested Rem oil, hopes gun oil, 3in1, motor oil, Break Free, lard (salt free) and of coarse WD40. None of the oils we tested faired well against WD40.

For the most part I use 3-in-1 oil, but I'm not really that picky and every tool that I have (with some exceptions) is a user. So, when I'm at work, and my blades get stiff, I'll use WD, Air Tool, etc...

Whatever is laying around really.

I use virgin olive oil, works for me and whenever I peel an apple or cut something it doesn't taste like WD40 :pok:
