Yellow Jackets in the house!!!
on: April 20, 2011, 04:11:17 AM
Hey Guys and Gals,
Yellow jackets have invaded a friend's house.  She hasn't a quarter clue where they are coming in and she's got small children who may or may not be allergic to stings.  Suggestions on how to find out where they are coming in?  Should she just call the Orkin man?  Any ideas? Thanks!

Depending on where they are, I would suspect they overwintered in the walls, ceiling or attic.  If she's not a "rip into the walls" sort of person, hire a pro.  If they're in the ceiling, they can eat the drywall, using it to build their hive until one day when it collapses in.  I've known a couple people this has happened to.

If there are kids present, and she's not familiar with them, yellowjackets aren't a good bug to learn on.  Call a pro.

Thanks for the replies guys.  What kind of pro?  I suggested she call Orkin and they apparently told her that they'd come out and spray once and charge her $235.  Anyone else she could try?

I'd check the Yellow Pages or ask around and see if anyone else has any recommendations.  Failing that, a company like Orkin didn't get where they are by doing a crappy job, so it's probably a safe bet.

eeeep! I hope it gets fixed/exterminated soon and everyone is okay.

we had a bumble bee in the house the other day, luckily I caught it fast (flew to the light of the window) and I've noticed several outside (buzzing around us) and she "IS" allergic to bees! :ahhh

Do NOT worry about bumblebees.  It's extremely rare that they sting--usually when trapped and it looks like no way out.  They are solitary bees, are herbivorous and want no part of a fight.  :)

that's what I've heard and read but because she is allergic (and could die from any sting) I have to get rid of them whenever they are around, especially in the house! :-[

she is also allergic to many dogs (not all) and if a dog even "licks" her biiiiig trouble!

I had that problem last year. Turns out there was a 1/4" gap in one of my storm windows at the top, and they had built their nest between the storm and inside panes. It wouldn't have been an issue except I also kept a window AC unit in there and they were slipping in past the insulation.

So... sounds obvious, but check the windows. Top to bottom and in between.
Let us therefore open the book of Nature and read in her records.
