What is my next step in a knife?
on: May 16, 2011, 02:46:29 AM
Hello my fellow knife fans.  :)  I just got blessed with one fantastic package by GadgetGuy, my wife bought me a Spyderco Tenacious, and I have a Sog Flash 2 on the way.  Now I am sapose to have money coming for my birthday from two sources.  I own the following knives:

Kershaw Leek
Kershaw SKyline
Case one handed opening locking knife
Spyderco Tenacious
Sog Flash 2 (one the way)

If I get the birthday money, I am thinking about another knife or multitool.  If I get a knife, what is the next step up in a folding knife over the knives I listed?  What is an upgrade in steel and handle material? Thanks for the help.
When In doubt, C4

Yeah, good start.  If you're interesting in a US-made, premium steel knife for not a lot of money, try the Leatherman E33L (based on your other thread, anyways).

Both you posted are saber grind blades..I think the full flat grind versions are better.  I guess that's another topic for you to research: hollow grind Vs. full flat grind

I was looking at the Leatherman E33L as well.  Blade grinding?  Hmmm, does it make a difference?  I guess that is one of those knife arguments that never have an answer.  :)  I will look into this as try to learn.

Just to confuse things how about a friction folder?  >:D

You can buy a Svord (Hand made in New Zeland)  :tu:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,22914.msg436123.html#msg436123

then after you have done a little work on it and decided you really like it save up for a Michael Morris friction folder  (hand made in the USA)

My current favorite is the Spyderco Paramilitary2. If you can go to the 100USD price range its near impossible to beat.
-s30v steel
-G10 handle
-compression lock
-4 way carry clip
-incredible ergonomics

Full flat vs hollow grind is always an issue, but it really comes down to how you plan on using the knife. FFG makes for a better slicer, while HG allows for greater blade strength.

I don't know if the Para2 is within your budget, if so its the way to go.

Why not look at Zero Tolerance 0350?

I've just looked at some reviews, and it seems to be very good knife...

Besides the fact that it's enormous and very heavy for an EDC knife?

5.6 ounces/158 grams is pretty heavy.

And that recurve isn't something i like in a knife. I like the 551 a lot better.

Yep jekostas, you're right... It is somewhat heavy...

But the blade shape is what I like, regardless of recurve...  :D :D

As you already have a slew of locking folders your next step up is to get a real Pocketknife. It's slipjoint time!

You can go with a Case, maybe a #75 Stockman in any variation.......

.....or something a bit heftier, my personal favorite, Gunboat Canoe.........

Or maybe step up a bit and go with Queen, a Gunstock pattern maybe....

......or maybe one of the other brands they produce for like Colonel Coon.....

Or maybe one of Queen Cutlery's premium brands like a Schatt & Morgan......

.....or Robeson......

But if you really want to go top tier look at Great Eastern Cutlery, either in their own GEC brand.....

.....or one of their other in-house brands like Northfield.....

.....or Tidioute....

Just some ideas, but I definitely think a slipjoint is your next step.  :tu:

Thank you for that great reply and nice pictures.  I will look in to this.  I did find a Case slipjoint that I like, it was ONLY $200.  LOL  :)  Too rich for my blood.  I will keep looking and see what I can find.
