Probably exactly what I carry now ... whatever I need to.  :D :D

That said, some days it would be very nice to have a Puukko on the belt. Very occasionally I do anyway, but it would be nice to do it more freely without having to dry-run potential conversations with the guys in the big hats

Actually, I'd like to add one of those electric cattle prod zapper doofers with express permission from on high to use it on those people in supermarkets who turn their shopping trolley sideways  across the aisle when they go to get anything off the shelf. Also, those blokes who choose to stand next to you to pee when there's a urinal further away that isn't next to anyone. (remembering to check the floor isn't wet first)

I'd also like a big red button on all my phones that when I press it causes the cold-calling telesales person's phone, or the fax machine of the numptie who is trying to fax me down my phone, to explode!

In the city, since in the country you can carry pretty much whatever you actually need:
Theoretically, any of my bigger knives like a bowie or even a machete, just for the sake of it  :gimme:.
Realistically, still the Micra, with some medium size folding knife; I hate carrying a lot of weight, and I don’t really wear clothes with lots of pockets. The Juice seems to be my limit.  :D

Interesting question.  Oddly I'm not sure I would change my carry habits at all.  Any time I feel the need to carry something it's because I feel a legitimate need to be carrying it, so locking MT's and knives at work, fixed blade when out wild camping, SAKs and traditional pocket knives when at home/around town etc.

Right now I'm not particularly into the OHO tactical knife look, though I have been in the past, so I really can't think of anything of that ilk I'd like to tote.

You know, I do live in a free state - at least in so far as guns and knives are concerned - and I rotate through my arsenal as my mood suits me.  Some days its a big honker like a ZT300, and other days its a little peewee like a SOG Flash 1.  Bigger is not always better, and a small blade with do 99% of the cutting tasks that a big one will do, but its nice that I can decide these things for myself rather than having some bureaucrat decide it for me.  I feel for my oppressed brothers, though!

Dumb Yank question:

Is this just a "big city" issue? I would imagine that if one lives in a smaller town, where everybody knows everybody, that you could probably sit in a pub with a locking MT hanging on your belt, and no one would care. True?

I pouch carried my old wave for years and that was working in london with no issues, but i was a floor layer so i guess not a issue as wore work cloths, for the last 12 years ive lived in poole in dorset and never been searched, infact ive never been searched , but if i was blades over 3inches and the lock are uk illegal,i would love them to remove the locking part as i dont mind the under3inch part but prefer locking blades,  :-\ but too a point i agree with you .

It's not really a "big City" issue either IMO.  I've lived in a City my whole life and have never been stopped or searched by a Police Officer in my entire life, and I don't see why I ever should be.  It's just that if you are carry a locking blade without good reason then you are breaking the law and, as I law abiding citizen, I don't like to do that. :)

I'd certainly agree with these guys. Whilst small rural village settings may alleviate some of the social concerns in as much as folks being less concerned by what you carry, the law is universal across the land. If it's anything other than a sub-3" slippie or friction folder, you'd better have a bloody good reason. I've mentioned before in other threads, I'm in Britains 5th largest city and frequently carry locking blades on multitools (though generally not dedicated locking folders), and even occasionally will have a fixed blade on my hip. The reason I do this is I feel I have good reason (which I feel I could justify in a legal setting). Even walked past a courthouse in the centre of a town midday on a Saturday with a 4" fixed blade on my hip - BUT I was penning a boat through a lock at the time. Found a few pics online of the lock and court in question to show proximity ...

Where I live one can carry almost any knife they want to provided it isn't concealed. And the further out in the country you live the more you see guys regularly walking around with fixed blade knives in a sheath. Ironically, most of the knives I carry often are just slipjoints.

I find that surprising. Here in the States, when Hollywood makes a movie that involves British law enforcement, they always seem to be the best, and most capable in the world...

Here in Michigan it pretty simple. No dagger, dirk, stiletto, or double-edged non-folding stabbing instrument of any length, or any other dangerous weapon, except a hunting knife adapted and carried as such.

Where it gets strange is in the length rules. There is no specific limitation on folding single edge blade length, unless you have the intent to use the knife unlawfully against another, then it can't be more than 3 inches long.  ???

So if I'm planning on stabbing someone, the knife better be single-edged and less than 3 inches long?

Okay, good to know I guess.

Here's a weird one from up North - it's illegal to carry a blade that's concealed in an object if the object is LESS than 30cm (12 inches) long.  Longer than 30cm (12 inches) and it's legal.

So, dagger combs and belt buckle knives?  Illegal

Sword canes and umbrellas with blades hidden in them?  Perfectly legal, go nuts!

I think that it's a matter of the lawmakers compromising with the knife owners. This way there is no law against any pocket knife / MT, but they give the cops on the street (mostly for certain "areas" of Michigan) the authority to confiscate anything over 3 inches.

That's why I like Canada.  Federal trumps local, so you don't have to worry about going in to another city and suddenly all the laws are different.

I live in Michigan and have a brother and close friend that each have over 25 years experience as LEO's.  Neither has ever confiscated a knife from someone just because they could.  They have, however, confiscated many knives that were being used in a threatening or unsafe manner.  The vast majority of LEO's are not out to confiscate knives from your average citizen.

I believe the laws here are much more restrictive on carrying fixed blade knives, but I don't remember exactly how they read.

I didn't mean to make it sound like the LEO's would confiscated a knife from someone just because they could. The way the law is written, there has to be some indication of intent on the part of the knife owner, before any action can be taken. But the law does give them the ability to have some control they otherwise wouldn't have, at least to help stem the tide of violence in our state.

Which could be of some help, since we now have the wonderful distinction of having the "Most Violent City in America"...

I'm sorry Turnsouth.  I didn't express my though thoroughly enough, it wasn't pointed at you.   There seems to be a lot of people in this and other forums that are concerned about the ability of LEO's to confiscate knives or arrest knife carriers.  My point was that, in my experience, the vast majority of LOE's are reasonable people and are not out to make life tough for responsible citizens.
