Gerber Steady

Pictures of the Steady were out on the internet a month or so ago, but this was the first time we'd seen one first hand. The intent here is for a medium size multitool, lightweight, with the ability to set up a camera (or a cell phone camera) for taking pictures out in the real world. Its expected to appeal to hikers, hunters, mountain bikers, outdoorsmen, etc.

(note individual backspring fingers for each blade)

The reason de jour of the Steady are these two "legs", which can be rotated down from the sides of the tool to form a tripod. A camera (or by means of the accessory suction cup, a cell phone camera) can then be attached using the standard 1/4" threaded camera stud, mounted on a ball-and-socket pivot.

Obviously the Steady is not intended to be used with overly large cameras or camcorders, but instead the slimmer cameras more likely to be carried by a person hiking in the wilderness. (the included user guide will recommend maximum camera weights)

Cool idea. I wonder how much movement is available with the legs to allow the tripod to stand on an uneven surface.

As an avid camera user I have to say that it seems like a good idea, especially if the stand can be adjusted at various angles so that the camera can be made to point upwards or downwards when needed, something that is difficult to achieve without a stand. I hope it can support a mid-size camera; not just phone size.

It is a shame that the movable feet have not had any tools incorporated in them(Bottle opener, socket etc.)

Very clever! And it might have a market.

I will say, I'm liking the blade design of the new Gerber products. I find this new blade shape seems very sturdy and is quite visually appealing to me (but then I like Tanto style blades)

Nope- Gerber was quick to point out that my Kodak Z650 was at or slightly beyond the maximum rating for the Steady, although it did hold it pretty well anyway. I wouldn't want to try a DSLR or anything bigger than a common point and shoot on it. And, let's face it, if you are spending $1000 on a good DSLR then you should spend the extra $50 and get a decent tripod.

That's kind of disappointing about the capacity, I was hoping it'd be enough for a mirrorless camera like my GF2.

Is the ball joint just held by friction or is there a locking mechanism that I'm not seeing?

This is not a tool for serious photography- it's for more casual users, and I see it being perfect for a younger couple out for a hike or bike ride that bring the tool in case of a slipped chain or carving a walking stick, but then decide to take impromptu pictures with their point and shoot or camera phone. When viewed in that kind of context, it's exactly what they want- something lightweight that serves multiple purposes that's not going to break the bank or weigh them down.

As for the ball joint, it is held in there by friction alone.

As a serious tool it's obviously not of much use, but I EDC the GF2 and use it for plenty of the same casual shots as anybody else. It would've been nice if it could fill the same role as a cheap tabletop tripod, just something to keep the camera steady for group portraits or indoor/night shots.

Well, that may be, but here are a couple of points:

1. The Steady may indeed hold your camera, as it held my big Kodak pretty well. It may not be an ideal tripod for it, but there was no hint of my Kodak slipping or flopping to one side or the other.

2. It is what it is- no one complains that Suzuki Swifts aren't that good off road because they aren't designed to go off road.

3. I would think that in many cases as a serious photographer you would want your knife or tool while the camera is set up already so you can "set up" the shot.

That's not trying to crap on your suggestions, I'm just thinking that while it might not fit your needs perfectly, it may still work out well enough for you. Or it could simply be that you are trying to get too much out of it. I'm certain if the Steady is successful enough then Gerber may come out with the Steady HD for larger cameras- you never know....

I like this idea. The lady and I take all our pics on our iPhones so this actually makes sense and looks useful. Good point though, how can I take pics of my multi if it's holding the camera?

Also I just bought one new in the packaging because I think it’s a slick idea and it’ll work well with my Pentax Q7.

I’m digging some of these old Gerber designs. I’m EDCing a Gerber Octane now and greatly enjoying it. now I’m adding a steady to the mix. Or at least to the camera bag.
