Wave Pivots
on: January 21, 2008, 10:21:56 PM
Hello!  I am new to the Multitool boards, and was introduced to this forum from a Scrap Yard Knives friend Whichdawg.

I have a question regarding my new Wave.  I have the original Supertool and the Micra scissors and this is my first Leatherman since 2000, so I am not familiar with the new pivot style.

I received a Leatherman Wave for X-Mas, and was just putting a lanyard on it when I discovered that the pivots that are holding the knives, saw and file actually turn.  I put my fore finger on one side and my thumb on the other, squeezed and they turned together.  Is this supposed to happen or do I need to return it?  Will the pivots loosen up or are they designed like this?  This only happens when the tool is closed, when opened however with the pliers exposed, the pivots do not turn.

I just wanted some opinions from the experts. I love Leathermans and they have served me well over the years!

Thanks for the feedback!

Dan

The pivots for those selected tools also turn on my Wave when you are opening the tools.

I've been using mine for about 2 years off and on and have yet to notice an outstanding looseness of the pivots. I am pretty sure the pivot hardware is Lock-tite-ed together so it shouldn't loosen up at the threads but it will rotate in the setting as you have seen.

If you ever have a problem with it I'm sure a trip to Oregon will take care of any issues you have.

Welcome!

I just inspected my Wave and the said pivots don't turn when you open and close the implements.

Don't worry, we don't judge people by the company they keep...  :pok:

I'd say to go ahead and use it as it's probably fine, but if you should ever doubt it for any reason, put it in an envelope and send it back to Leatherman.  their customer service folk are great to deal with and want you to be happy with your tool.

Well, it happens to most of my one handed opening LM's- besides the Charges.. I wouldn't worry about it! On my New Wave when it did that the straight edge knife would get really tight and hard to open so I had to move turn the pivots to loosen up the blade..

The two halves of the screw and socket are locked with some sort of epoxy (probably loctite).  Since there is nothing but oil or brass washers inbetween any of the components, I would say that this is not an issue.  You're fine to use it as is.  If it wasn't supposed to turn, then they would have put those anti-turning flats on the shaft like they did on the other end of the tool for the screwdrivers and such.
