PowerDuo is here!
on: March 26, 2012, 07:27:46 PM
Hey everyone,

The new SOG PowerDuo just arrived!  I've just taken some pics of it and I'm editing and uploading them, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up!

More soon- very soon!  :D

Uploading it to the Gallery now.... not much longer.  Those of you who know how to find the Gallery can see the pics sooner!   >:D

OK, here are the pics.  I'll post them all then try to answer questions afterwards, rather than take extra time talking about it when what everyone really wants is eye candy!  :D

Whew!

So the vic scales are swappable directly on this sog?

It actually looks interesting to me.  I've been looking for a car multi to have on me for whatever, and also a reason to buy more tools... hmm.  I didnt realize that it had the compound leverage pliers and I do like that.  I'll keep my wallet closed until you do the review parts though! :D

So, if Victorinox releases a version of the new soldier with toothpick and tweezers we can say they are copying SOG  ???

Good idea to include them, by SOG  :D

Looks very interesting.

No, actually the Vic scales are not directly swappable.  They are close I'll admit, but there is a difference- that's why I made sure to post pics of them together!  :D

Bob wanted to borrow an OHT from the Victorinox booth at SHOT then go to SOG and get side by side pics but I thought that would be a little rude to SOG, and they have always been good to us.

Speaking of being rude to SOG, I forgot to say HUGE THANKS TO CHRIS@SOG FOR SENDING THIS OUT.  I should have lead with that, but I was a bit overexcited trying to get pictures taken and uploaded.  For those who may be interested, Travis and Chris@SOG are already working on details for a group buy, so if you are interested, let Travis know.  There are no details yet that I know of, but I'm sure they'll be happy to know there is some interest.

The OHT and/or Spirit and Charge would be just fine. Thanks!

Looks very cool.  I'm curious to hear your review.  I'm a little worried how the pliers might perform given the OH blade looks like it might pinch your hand if you squeeze down on the pliers.    Also, it definitely looks chunky which is a given considering the pliers in it, but yeah a width comparison shot would be awesome.

I'll see what I can do.

It's a little on the thick side. Not a lot thicker than an OHT but it is thicker.  Despite it being kind of thick I keep getting the feeling that it should have a pocket clip, although I'm not sure why.

Initial impressions are good though. It seems like it might be a bit awkward for the small hand/short finger set as it seems to require a bit more travel on the pliers to open and close the head- even more than usual for a SOG, but that might just be my imagination.

There's little or no chance of hand pinching.  It's hard to explain but the blade and scale are sort of stepped up from the handle.  I'll try and get pics to show what I am talking about, but the limited fiddling I've had so far seems to point to no pinching.

I do not.  I asked, but I think we all got caught up discussing the Group Buy for members, and I think that's about as far as that got.

I'm warming to the idea of this new SOG, still not sure it's something I'm desperate to buy, but I can see the appeal for others.  A good looking addition to the 'OHO blade+pliers' tool that seems to be a must-have for many of the big makers.

I think a SOG SwitchPlier would of made a better dance partner  :twak: :pok: :pok: :D :D :D.

It looks more solid than a SwitchPlier  , what do you reckon Def compared to the old Switchy how does the PowerD stack up  .

More travel in the plier handles .... for a SOG  :ahhh :ahhh :( :( :(.

I still want one BAD  :gimme: :D

Well I have to say the plier head instils a lot more confidence than the Switchplier.  It's not nearly as cool though!

Basically what this is is a Pocket Power Plier with fancy handles and a few less tools.  If you think on it in those terms then you get a really good idea of what this one is about.  The handles make it a lot easier on the hands and the OH blade is nice.  Inside you are kind of limited on tools, but the few that are there are good.  The can opener and bottle opener both incorporate screwdrivers and the Phillips is done quite well too, so even though there are very few parts you are still getting maximum function out of it.

Another thing that is often overlooked is the clip on the sheath.  I have been developing a great fondness for easy on, easy off sheaths that feel secure, and this one fits the bill nicely.  My father is a great believer in track pants and I think one of the reasons he swears by the Power Assist I sent him rather than the Spirit I also sent him is simply because he can clip the Power Assist on anything and have it with him.

You can argue that the Spirit is a better model, but it's not terribly effective when it's at home.

I'm glad to hear that the Phillips is made well; IIRC, that's one issue most of the iffy comments on here regarded as a potential issue. :tu:

Also, yes, I could really see it doing well with a pocket clip. :D

I take it the tools are fixed, and not interchangeable, Bossman?

I have been wondering that myself.  I think they could be replaced, but I'm not certain what you could put in to replace what's there.

I have a few extra SOG bits lying around so I'll give it a shot.

SOG shows a list price of $80.00.  I saw an online retailer showing $57.99.  How prices will actually run once the Power Duo is released later in the Spring is anyone's guess.

I will stay in contact with Chris@sog.  Whenever he has a better idea of release date and pricing, he will work with us to arrange the deal.

Nothing too serious yet, but I have played with it a fair bit and have yet to get any of the black coating to wear off on my hands.

Also, if you look closely you'll note that the blade has an ever so slight recurve to it, which I love.

This one strikes me as a good urban type EDC.  The lack of a saw or file means I wouldn't be too thrilled with it in the woods, and the lack of scissors is not making me happy either, but that's not really a flaw- just personal opinion.

The raised dots on the scales are pretty aggressive, and if you scrape them against a tender part (say the backs of your fingers) you'll certainly notice them, but they do provide excellent grip and are not uncomfortable in use.  Whether they will wear down or not I dunno- only time will tell on that one.

The obvious question for me: How's that blade for left handed OHO?

Also, have you tried deploying the blade while wearing work gloves? The thumb hole looks like it might work ever with light gloves.

It's not going to work left handed as the plier handle is in the way.  As for opening it with gloves, I haven't tried it yet, but it shouldn't be a problem.  The blade opens smoothly and the hole is big enough.
