hi, been lurking here for awhile , gained some knowledge and was inspired to spend some money.. so i figured i'd join the mob here and say hello.

i have owned a gerber multi tool ( 2nd gen ) for 20 years or so. i just recently purchased a LM sidekick , which i like so much and i just ordered a pockettool x piranha. the sidekick is my edc and so shall be the piranha.

Hello from Southeastern Michigan.

Sounds like you have some nice tools G.

I prowl around between saginaw and bay city.. but, i've been spotted all over michigan visiting friends or family. i've hunted just about every major wooded areas well.

yep, i have no real need for the piranha, not sure what i will use it for, but its just slick looking I cant help but to want to fiddle with it.  i even got a few ideas for modding it with a mill file.

You should try and make the Michigan Meetup:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,36090.0.html

I'm sure there will be lots of interesting toys and tools for you to check out there, and more information that any one person could contain in one sitting!

I know exactly what you mean, G.  I was bitten by the MT bug about a year ago, and in that time I have purchased 21 Leatherman, 4 Victorinox, 1 SOG, and 1 Gerber.  Most of them are unused, but they have all been "fondled" a lot!

1 year in Detroit, MI.
19 years in Alma, MI.
10 years in Chicago, IL.
40 years in Bolingbrook, IL(Boringbrook)(35 miles SW of Chicago).

But I still consider myself a Michigan boy.

All of my relatives are in Michigan(ignorant, dysfunctional, red neck, trailer trash), that's why I'm in Illinois.   :)

ok let me try and respond ..

grant, the MI meet up is in my parents back yard , darn near.  so we'll see if i can and not working. my dad sat on local government there and is well known. and for 24 years i have run the deer woods in that area and even owned a house on a lake there.

j-sews, i go to TC every day for work, i make the trip and back.. yep TC is sweet.
i make the drive just off airport rd and back 5 days a week, and if you know where the buffalo ranch is on 37, then you can see my wagon roll by.

hammer, i have been carrying a multi for 20 + years now..what else can i say ? :D
i like gizmo's and trick toys, but they gotta do thier job. my gerber has really held up its end of the deal , more times then i can count.

i've been to 34 other states ( for work ) and ole michigan is home. but as for MI, i have been all over and i have alot alot of family, they live all over MI so i claim alot of ground and MI history.

G - I've been in construction for going on 37 years now.  I started as a laborer working for my father's industrial construction company in about 1973, and I had a multitool on my belt even then, and all through my years as a carpenter, then superintendent.  During those years, a multitool was just that, a tool.  Now I find myself in Construction Management, I still carry one even though I don't perform any "hands on" work anymore, and I began to see the differences in the MT's.  It was MT.org that made me see a little more into the design and quality differences in the tools, and I started about a year ago really appreciating the different functions of the different tools, and began to buy them even though I knew I would never use half of them for the little odd jobs around the house that call for any type of tool.  I guess my point is that when I was working with my hands, I had to have tools that would function well, and now they don't have to function well, they just have to make me happy!

there are certainly more people out there with multi tool experience then me.
for me, its about having something for tools and not necessarily needing them rather than really needing a tool and not having anything.
getting stranded somewhere, lost in the deep michigan woods, snowed in the cabin or something like that.  i do know its psychological as much as anything , but having a wee bit of edc that can help me stay alive make me feel better.  i cant hardly leave the house without my multi tool on me.

Yep, I've lived within a few miles of Oleson's buffalo farm my entire life. :) Actually, that field where they are now used to be a hay field when I was growing up, and a portion of the herd itself used to be where the big mall on airport road is now. Yeah, that was a while ago. :P

Someone from Michigan (but another forum) suggested all these types lived in the U.P., and were known as "yoopers".  And you forgot inbred (this is what she said, not me)!

I have only been in Michigan for 15 years.  Some of the winters have been mighty tough.
Still here though.  Oh yeah, my kids!     They practically grew up here, but I am an Army brat.

Everyone should show up for the get together at Herricks Recreation Area.  I will say this about Michigan, lots and lots of parks and rec areas.  Beautiful.

j-sews,
i know what you are saying. things change and grow and sometimes those things can alter or erase our personal histories.  my grandfather built a house and had an apple orchard. years after the house fell down, the parks dept. made a park, waking and auto path thru the area and totally removed the orchard and foundation of the house.  if you ever go to sleeping bear dunes and drive thru the scenic drive at the back side of the dunes, you will drive thru my families history and not even know it.
i see those buffalo every morning when i go into tc. then i make the turn on airport rd and see all the mall traffic  ::) it sure is a change, in just a mile of road. its like time traveling a bit i guess..

G - I agree 100%!  It really does all boil down to survival, and if you can find a use for your multitool somewhere in there between the good life and survival mode, that's good, too.
