I had not read any reviews about the Gerber Flik when I saw one in the REI store showcase and asked the saleman if I could examine it.  I did not realize that you have to squeeze the buttons on each handle before retracting the pliers.

I failed to push the buttons and got the pliers head jammed partially inside the handles.  The salesman had to use a Channellock pliers to pull the Flik's jaws out. He said the same thing happened to the last few customers who tried the Flik.

Hmmm, I cannot get mine to jam up even if I try. If I don't push the buttons, the pliers won't retract. If I do push the buttons, the pliers retract just fine. No jam-ups either way.....?

Did you try pushing the pliers head into the handles while squeezing the handles (and not pushing the buttons)?

Yes. But the pliers absolutely do not budge unless the buttons are pushed. Doesn't seem to matter whether the handles are being squeezed or not. And both buttons need to be pushed before the pliers will slide.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly agree that the Flik has an overly-complex mechanism, but I can't get mine to screw up. Guess that's a good thing. :)

Okay, I think I see what you're getting at. I did manage to slightly jam them in, but I could not do this without PARTLY pushing in the buttons.

What happens is that, when partly pushing in the buttons, the sliders "unlock" so that the pliers can be pushed in, BUT the pawls remain in the open position. At this point the pliers start to close, but the handles remain "stuck" in the open (i.e. non hand pinching) position. If you force them in hard enough, they WILL get jammed in there pretty good (not something I care to try).

That being said, I think this is a non-issue. You just have to fully press the buttons when squeezing the handles so that they (the handles) close up properly prior to pushing in the pliers.
