And check this... REI is probably the most expensive online US retailer. Lol I guess you're paying for their lifetime return policy though.

I have to agree. REI is very overprices considering what we are used to. The only thing I have purchased there was two Micras (red and blue) and ended up returning them. I really feel bad for the guys in the UK.  :(

And the situation is no better in Australia.  I refuse to pay the exorbitant prices some Oz sellers ask, I can often buy for about 30-40% even after adding in postage from the US.

Here is an example:

Oh, and shipping is extra (on top of the $Au 175.50 they are asking for the Surge).

I was at the downtown Austin REI and everything there was at least $10 more than normal prices elsewhere  They are a coop retailer though

I emailed leatherman and the reason i was given is that it's due to import tax charged by our govt!!!! so we're being screwed twice by them, they won't let us carry most of our tools as edc because of stupid laws and charging us for the privilage for not carrying them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UK is still cheaper than many other places..

A lot also has to do with the dealer. If there is only one importer he can charge whatever he wants.

Also, despite the excuses for taxes, with many items (see cameras) you will see that the manufacturer puts the same recommended price for Dollars, Euros or Pounds, whereas they are not equal in value. So if the seller sells at that price you will pay more….
