Charge AL Poor QC on file
on:
March 08, 2013, 01:55:16 PM
Hi, I've just bought a job lot of 3 Charge AL which were all brand new and never used. They are all dated 0607. The file on all three of them does not align in the centre of the slot in the closed position. As a result, the file rubs on the inside of the black aluminium sleeve. I was sure this would be covered by the warranty, but I've been informed by Whitby & Co that this is a feature of all the Charge AL they have in stock.
I can't believe a company like Leatherman will allow such poor quality control to be passed! Any advice as to how I can remedy this. I don't want the nice black coating to be rubbed off, even though it is on the inside of the sleeve.

I have a few Charges of different types and they pretty well all rub. It bothers me most on the titanium models because I paid extra for the titanium that is being ground away by the diamond file I paid extra for.
The worst part is that this has been going on as long as there has been a Charge model available and I don't think Leatherman has done anything about it. There is a new variant of the Charge this year though... maybe they have finally decided to fix it?

I must of gotten lucky then, as neither the file nor saw rub my Charge TTi.
Had read elsewhere that someone had a similar issue. They loosened the pivot bolts, turn them around until the file aligned, and tightened it down. They said over time the pivot did rotate back and they had to repeat the process. As to how accurate that information is I do not know.

Both of my Waves (must cheaper than the Charge models), do not have this problem. Are we all going to just accept this is 'NORMAL' and let Leatherman get away with charging so much for a poorer quality item? I am just so glad to be part of this forum, since I became a collector of Leatherman tools. I can get honest reviews and opinions, where as by watching youtube reviews, I always end up getting what seems to be completely biased opinions which turn out to be misleading. Plus I've made contact with like minded people like Bruce 909 and Dunc on this forum.

It's something we have mentioned tie and again here on the forum and something that I have personally mentioned to the folks at Leatherman on various occasions but they don't seem interested, willing or able to correct it, at least not to this point. Perhaps this is one of the reasons for the redesign of the Charge handles announced at this year's SHOT Show. As awesome as this forum is, it is independent of the design process at the big companies, so it's really up to them whether they want to listen to us or not.

My Wave rubs too. I have sometimes managed to get it to not rub but I can't really remember how
If it really bothers you, just push it away from the slot slightly as you open it?

My wave also rubs a tiny bit. If you press the file down slightly as you open/close then there is no rubbing on mine.
