Stuart Little is going to be ok.
on: September 04, 2013, 06:17:16 PM
As most of you know, we have a farm.

That means we have barn cats.  One of them is named Stuart Little.  He started out as a house cat, but by age 3 he had decided he liked to live on the quiet but wild side and lived year around out on the farm, mostly in outbuildings during the cold and hunting by the creek and edge of the pastures in summer.

We would go for months without seeing him.

When he got to be about 10 or 11, he decided it was ok to live in the heated tackroom in the winter--which we were thrilled about.

In early spring, Stu was having trouble with his teeth.  At age 14-15, we figured we'd help him by getting canned catfood for him.  Then about mid summer, Stuart began to lose weight fast.  He was still eating voraciously but he kept getting skinnier.

Now Stuart hasn't been off the farm since he was neutered (age ~1) and the thought of trying to catch him and take him to the vet was inconceivable.  We finally found a mobile vet who'd stop by and see him.

He's diabetic.  Insulin AM and PM and he should be fine.

To quote my British collegues, I am well chuffed  (and relieved)  :)

This is Stuart from May.  I haven't had the heart to take a recent shot, but I will now that we have a solution.

Yes.  It was shocking to see how fast he declined.  At one time he was the biggest cat on the farm.  By a lot.  And he has the meow of a wild cat--but the gentlest soul.  He likes quiet children the best, but anyone who's calm and quiet, he'll sidle upto for some lovin'.

Good news.   :tu:

Our cat lives outdoors all summer and takes care of the mice around here.  Hes up to 25 this summer so far that Ive discovered, who knows how many others he's got.  We keep in inside during winter, but boy he hates that.  I can see the value in having barn cats around the farm though, they're like automatic pest control.

That's good news I suppose... if it was possibly an issue to take him to see a vet, would it not also be an issue to do the insulin shots?

In any case better news than Guido who had to put his 16 year old cat Sampie down this past weekend. :(

The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Ya' know, in our experience, cats could care less about subcutaneous injections.  You scritch the back of their necks for a bit, pull up a tent and give the injection.  They never object.  I think it reminds them of being picked up by their moms.

Giving pills is a whole other can o' whoopass.  THAT pisses them off.

yeah, we discovered that we can buy a can of special pate food from the vet... both our cats LOVE this pate, so all we need to do is crush said pill and mix it with some pate and they'll inhale it in no time :D

That's awesome that he'll be ok. My dog has been diabetic for the past couple years. My vet told me that it leads to blindness and sure enough it did. Not sure if its the same with cats. Might be a good question to ask the vet. Beautiful cat by the way.

Hope he will be back to his old self soon. Nice to hear how people care for their animals.
(although, in my experience, Cats usually think of you as their humans, not the other way around... ;))

Our two lazy inhouse cats send the best wishes.

(Image removed from quote.)

Kitteh does not look happeh.

Poor guy.  I hope the medication gets him right as rain ASAP.  Diabetes sucks, but at least it can be (more or less) controlled so that the person (or kitty!) can lead a normal and active life.

New Update:

The vets were back to the farm this morning and are very pleased with his progress. When he was diagnosed, Stuart weighed 6 lbs (down from his normal 20 lbs).

Today he weighs a little over 10 lbs.   :)

His insulin dose will go up a little and they'll check him again just before Thanksgiving.  :tu:
