chest pain
on: October 17, 2013, 07:26:42 AM
I was having chest pains for a few weeks. Went to the Dr who send me off for some tests. Unfortunately before I got those tests I ended up in emergency the following day. I had a massive heart attack and most of the damage was done by the time I got there. One artery already completely blocked. Spent a week in hospital and I am still recovering. I keep active enough and am not overweight but too much junk food between meals and too much stress along with a family history of heart disease has put me in this category at only 40 years old. Look after yourselves guys. Watch what you eat and see your doctor regularly. Don't leave it too late like I did.

Glad you're on the mend Dude.
treat it as a 'warning' and change the things you can. It's not the end just time to alter direction a bit.

The good thing is that since you are 40 most likely if you really really take care of yourself you can fully recover  :tu:

One of the problem with heart attacks is that since you are already many years into some bad habbits, for example junk food like you say, most people cant change their lifestyle afterwards and the attacks always come back.

So be patient and determined and this will be just a bad memory in a few years  :tu:

I've made a few choices in the last couple of years to try to keep myself safe from that. I'm not really more active than I was as I figure I was always reasonably active, what with walking my dogs, kayaking and so on.

I've given up drinking soda pop and exchanged it for carbonated water (for the most part down from several liters per day to maybe a glass every couple of weeks) and I have started eating a bowl of cereal (Honey Nut Cheerios) each night as they are proven to help lower cholesterol.  I also eat less fast food (although I could never give it up entirely!) and just eat less at each meal.

Those changes have made me feel a lot better and really didn't require any major changes in life.  I think that is the key because as was mentioned above, you aren't likely to keep as many radical changes in your life as you return to old habits.

Glad to see you are still with us.  From what I understand it's a difficult thing to recover from.

Sorry to hear that, and hope you have a speedy recovery.  I have an uncle who pasted away with a heart attack a few years back, and since then I have always carried some 300mg Aspirin(with no time delay coating) in my emergency med kit, just in case anyone who are suspicious of having a heart attack.

I do highly recommend to ask your doctor about it, and to carry one with you at all times if possible.

Often it's just the genetics lottery and not simply lifestyle choices, but knowing how to help prevent heart disease is the best tool you have :)

Wow, that's scary, and eye opening as well.  I'm glad you survived it, and I hope you are able to stick with any changes you need to make to recover and hopefully prevent any further issues.  This certainly makes me think I need to make some changes myself...

Damn, hope you feel better soon!  Bad hearts run on both my mothers and fathers side, and I have SVT and MVP, but luckily they don't really bother me yet.

That's a really good idea, and it's something that you can easily carry with you.

This.

Look at your family history.  If there's a lot of heart disease, you're at risk and you need to be very active in maintaining heart health.  Diet may be tightly controlled, exercise at prescribed levels, medications and regular checkups.

If you're lucky enough to have good genetics, then you're lucky enough to be freer with your diet and exercise.  Moderation is the key for the lucky ones.

My father in law had a massive heart attack at age 42, and is currently 72. It did require changing some habits... diet, exercise, but also medications.

I wish you a speedy recovery, and hope this is more of a 'wake up call' than a life-wrecking event.

Get well soon. :tu:

glad you came out of this alive and aware of what you must do.  good luck to you.  and try to ease the stress.  I know that is easier said than done, but if you cannot affect the outcome, try not to focus on the worries while you wait.
If I can help, let me know

Ouch, that's rough. Sorry for the bad fortune...the wife and I are in similar places with our health, and we've been making some positive changes. It's a bit easier when we both have issues and the fixes can have some mutual support.

I hope your recovery is full man, godspeed.
