30 day Climber Challenge
on: November 02, 2013, 01:03:50 AM
I was inspired by the recent '30 Day Huntsman Challenge'

I'm not a tradesman, so I won't be abusing the hell out of it, like that other character did. I'll just use it like a normal, sensible guy who flies a desk for a living.

The first duty was to help ring in the weekend. I had it out of the box and cuttin' the cheese to go with my wine within minutes.

Minutes later, the toothpick was deployed for its intended purpose. (zucchini)

I was surprised to find that this knife (from feebay) with the reverse scales doesn't have a metal shield pressed into the plastic, but it is printed on in metallic silver paint. :( Not a deal breaker, but it woulda been nice to know about this BEFORE placing the order, eh?

Anyone want to join me? Try to carry a Climber ONLY for 30 days? Post a cell phone pic when you use it?

I think I will succeed, as I EDC'd a Super Tinker and Tinker for many years.

I only give up the T-handled Phillips in favor of the corkscrew, pin, pen, eyeglass screwdriver.

I can't go 3 days with the same MT or SAK, much less 30 days.  More power to you, homey!   :)

I messaged the seller, he replied that he buys these from Victorinox, who makes them this way for promotional knives: it leaves the back scale totally blank, with lots of room for company logos and such.

One day, maybe I will replace them with a proper set. ;)

Then, I will either use the tip on the can opener, (it works 90% of the time, for non-recessed screws) Sometimes, it works better than a T-Phillips for screws that are next to something.

If that doesn't work, I'll go and get a real screwdriver with a heavy heart.

We'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I'd just do what I'd if I was carrying an SI or Farmer-small driver on the can opener or grab a real screwdriver. There's a full toolbox sitting in the back room of the store.... Honestly I don't deal with too many Phillips screws at work during the day.

I'm going to try and join you on that challenge. I just got a new old stock climber, so I'll give it a go. I can't make any promises, but I'll try anyways. The climber is one of the perfect edc SAKs imo.

30 days with a Climber, nah. 30 with a Voyager... maybe.

You should try my "Victorinox anything with digital screen plus scales 365 day challenge". Thats a mouth full, it's a challenge just mentioning the challenge.
All plus tool and a watch and possibly more... DONE! Why carry less tool in the same form factor?

After reading this thread I wondered how many climbers i can find in the house.. and since its been a while since I've cleaned and oiled them maybe its time for a little Climber reunion.

they're everywhere!

I have this "No Scissors, No Carry" thing for SAKs, and before i discovered Multitool.org i carried them for years!

What happens when you encounter a Phillips screw?  :pok:

That happened to me a couple of days ago, the truck I was driving at work had the passenger side wing mirror moving because it was too loose.  I looked at the back of the mirror and it had a phillips screw that needed to be tightened, there I was with my Victorinox Bantam as my only SAK with me - oh no!

No phillips:

Then I thought - would that flat screwdriver part of the combo tool fit in one of the slots of the phillips screw?  The answer was yes!  I tightened up that screw and the mirror now stays in place nicely!

Not having a phillips screwdriver isn't always going to lead to disaster!
But I do still love my Cybertool 34 - great on many screws that would stymie the standard back layer or in-line phillips screwdrivers!

If I wanted to bother with a 30-day challenge I'd probably go with my Victorinox Ranger though - I actually use that file quite often.  The Ranger has a great toolset and there really isn't all that much that it can't handle.  It doesn't have the plus scales so no pen, but I can make notes on my smart phone and don't really need a pen very often.  It does have a hole behind the corkscrew though so I've added a stainless pin and I also added an eyeglasses screwdriver into the corkscrew.
I've got a lot of really useful tools on that Ranger: 2 blades, scissors, pry tool/screwdriver (can be used as a cap lifter too apparently), saw, file, can opener/small screwdriver, awl, chisel, hook, small screwdriver, corkscrew, eyeglasses screwdriver, pin, tweezers & toothpick.
For its size & weight the Ranger is incredibly well packed with great tools!

Day 2 with the Climber:
  • Opened two Mexican Cokes with the bottle opener. (Mexican Cokes = old style glass bottle with old style bottle cap)
  • Opened one bottle of wine with the awl (for the foil) and corkscrew.
  • Sliced up the rest of the cheese block to go with the wine to my friend and I
  • Installed a blinky LED tail light on my bike with the flat screwdriver
  • Clipped some Chicago hot dog coupons out with the scissors
  • Used the toothpick after the hot dogs
  • Used the "blade" of the can opener to pry open a stubborn pistachio
No pix today, as I had company whom I didn't want to weird out. You'll have to take my word for it today.

I would totally get in on this—if I weren't already embroiled in the Rebar Challenge. I'm sad now.

I'll just have to dry my tears with my Rebar, though its lack of absorbancy might be an issue.

Yeah I think it is a good idea to only have one tool in challenge at a time.

we can try to always have a tool in some sort of long term testing or whatever.

I know Jothra would be a excellent precipitant in this challenge. Now I am sad too

I don't think I could get by with just a climber all day everyday for a month but I'm enjoying this topic  :climber:

I love all these challenges :tu:  I don't have a Climber though.  I think I'd go with KiwiMark and use my Vic Ranger Plus if I were to do a 30 day challenge.  I don't think I could go a full month with just the same SAK and no other MTs at all, especially after being used to carrying 2 or 3 items a day ;)

The Climber is one of my favorite SAKs, and I don't think I would have a problem completing a 30-day challenge with it.  It won't be the next 30 days, though, as I have firm plans to try out my Victorinox Cigar Cutter for its specific purpose next weekend.
