EDC/EDW INSANITY
Setting on my coffee table is a 2013 Lumi Nox catalog. Looking thru it I drool over certain watches (at these prices they should be called time delivery systems).
Why exactly do I want one of these? I already have The Cadet (a pre 2000 version) that rest on my night stand and gets worn at bed time.
I have over twenty watches ranging from $25.00 to $1000.00 and out of all of them I wear at best five on a regular basis.
I have an Seiko Orange Monster (I no longer blame Def but thank him for introduce me to this beast of a watch) if you don't own one or handled one you are missing out.
I think my pipe dream is to own ONE watch (an EDW) that I can wear day and night (If they made an OM with the glow tubes I would be in heaven).
Then I start to think about people obsessing over EDC in MTs, SAKs and what ever else suits their fancy.
The other day I met a jeweler that took the time to explain to me in detail (I never really thought of) Why automatics are so expensive and the beautiful syncing of ALL the parts
the hand fitting and polishing on some and how this isn't something that can be knocked out in a couple of hours.
He explained to me the difference between chronograph and chronometer. I thought a chronometer was a fancy stopwatch but he set me straight on that detail.
Showing him my $40 pawn shop Omega he put a new battery and we admired the tuning fork as it hummed away.
He made me realize that there is a beauty and order in watches. Showing me a book on movements I got interested in knowing what was in my Chase Durer and I discovered it's an ETA 251.262 looking it up I found a story of a guy rebuilding one with lots of pictures.
For a quartz watch there is a lot of parts, gears and coils and rotors etc...
I said all this to say these two things.
1) Don't live to get money. Have a few things, good things.Take care of them, learn how they work.
2) Variety is the spice of life. Enjoy your options, your different flavors of watch, knife MT etc..
Looking over my watches now I smile when I realize just how incredible these items are that I take for granted.
