Neat combination tool. Is it Russian?
on: January 26, 2014, 09:30:06 PM
Picked this one up awhile back. It was rather rusty, but a little steel wool, a lot of elbow grease, and a dab of cold bluing made it look nice again. There is a logo on one side but I don't recognize it. TM, or maybe TIM, inside a diamond, inside an oval. And the letters on the back side seem to be Cryllic.

Any idea what the letters mean, or who made this tool?

Not Russian, as far as I know the Russian alphabet doesn't have "I", they use "И" instead.  Maybe Ukrainian.

I've seen that stamp before I think just can't remember where. :ahhh

I cannot tell if that is an "I" between the T and the M, or some sort of other logo?

I suspect that it isn't a regular "I" but some other letter that looks a bit like an I with a squiggly bit above it.  That would fit in with how the T and M are located well below the centre of the the "sprocket/gear" circle.  But I have no non-english language skills so no idea what it actually is.

Cool tool though  :tu:

I've seen similar tool sets on the handles but the plier hammer head is somewhat new.  Looks like a fencing tool of some nature.

That letter(or cypher)inside the gear logo looks to be an upside down version of the one in picture #2.I used to have a Russian-English dictionary around but it got lost in the move to Michigan.Interesting tool nonetheless.

Yes, it is russian tool or more correctly soviet tool.
I don't know what meant "T|M", but "ц4р" mean "цена 4 рубля" = "price 4 rubles"  ;)

Thanks for the help, wowaboro.

Bob, I saw on the wrench forum you have a few of similar tools. What are they for and do you have a name for them?

Yes, thank you for the help wowaboro!!

Nikola, I do not know if there is a special name for these tools. The Russian one is well built, but the chrome plated ones below, stamped JAPAN and TAIWAN and INTERPUR, are poorly built. They clearly are intended to do many things, but they are made so badly I don't think they would do anything very well. ::) :P

I have the box this one came in. It is from Taiwan, and supposedly "Ideal For The Do It Yourself Handyman" ::) ::)

Great info!

@livan - Any significance to the gear wheel surrounding the letters in Bob's photo and the absence of the gear wheel in your photo?

Main lettering. Basically in the USSR three letter designation factories. Find exactly TTM almost impossible. A lot of products are manufactured in munitions factories in the shops "consumer." Military factories called Boxes. They had only a mailbox to communicate. With stretch to assume that the diamond as an allusion to the tank, it is a common symbol in the Soviet tanks. But this assumption.

They remind me of wheel weight hammers actually. They're almost identical. Hammer, pliers, scraper and pry tool.
