There are special noise-reduction walls, used e.g. along railroad tracks and highways. But I can't give you any infos on avaiability or prices. The might turn out to be monetary overkill (I have a figure of ~10.000 € per 1m Autobahn, but that was a 4m wall with ~50dB reduction, if I remember correctly)

Maybe you could look into those rather than go for a wooden construction. (It's some kind of porous concrete)

Sorry Lynn. I used to live in a neighborhood like that- the land lord tried to claim workshifts as the reason he'd only show it first thing in the morning. On a Saturday, it didn't look that odd, but I guess everyone was passed out. Turns out I was the only person in the building with a job, at least one they could report. Serious, in Vermont, and I could sit in my bedroom and watch this guy dealing, and only about 200 yards from the police station. I used to sleep with three bags of tube sand against the door- wouldn't stop anyone, but if they wanted in they'd make enough noise to wake me up.

Yeah, that didn't last long. I never was more grateful to lose a security deposit than the day I moved out of there.

Wow Lynn. I thought my parents had it rough... they've got neighbours that play loud bassy music constantly.

It sucks how one family can ruin a whole street. Some people shouldn't be allowed to breed.

You know this little cottages at the border of a forest at a dead-end road? Now you know for which kind of people they built those!

The worst neighbour I ever had played music as loud as my own stereo. Luckily, only during daytime and more luckily, only music I liked  8)

Regarding loud music, I know how annoying that is!  Its caused me to move apartments more than once.  People are rude. When we bought a house here I was so happy to have quiet.  Its mostly older people in my neighborhood and quiet how I like it!

Yeah it drives me mental. The only reason I haven't thumped the little prick that does it at my folks place is I'd lose my firearms license...

Every day I stop and think about how lucky I am to live on a dairy farm nowdays. I spend 3 hours a day in total driving to/from the city for work and it's worth it because of three main reasons:
  • My nearest neighbour is half a mile away. After that it's a couple of miles before another house.
  • I can look up and see the stars and milky way because of the lack of light pollution.
  • If I feel like doing some shooting, I just grab a rifle, open the gate and walk down to the back of the farm where my little range set up by the river.

It's absolutely worth the long commute.

I thought I'd give an update on the stuff with my neighbor.

She's scheduled to go to court on 14 May, on three counts: Driving on Revoked License, Leaving the Scene, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

Two of these charges could have a maximum of 1 year in prison. Non-concurrent sentencing, therefore, could be up to two years. Since she's done this kind of thing multiple times, I see absolutely no reason why they should be lenient, but I bet they will be.

Because, as harsh as it sounds, she's white, blond, fairly pretty, polite, and plays the weepy victim.

EDIT: Oh, also... Man, it it awesome that you can look this stuff up online. Our County's Circuit Clerk website is pretty awesome.

Update on this...

So, how do you keep from getting thrown in prison for gross traffic violations?

I guess you just DON'T GO TO COURT!

The trial date came and went, and I checked the county clerk's office records. Nothing. No status changes. I was wondering WTF? Then the update finally popped up. Contempt of Court, Appearance Completion.

Next trial date is 24 June. She seems to just be digging her hole deeper.

Wow Lynn.  I just read all this.  Sorry you're having to deal with such nonsense, but hopefully she gets thrown in the slammer for a couple years at least.  Makes me glad to live in a small, rural area.  There may be idiots around in various places, but none close.  Too bad about the dog business too.  I don't have any myself, but I do like dogs, and they tend to like me.  However, I wouldn't hesitate to throw down on one that I felt was seriously threatening me or a member of my family.  I hope it all gets sorted out in your favor when all is said and done :tu:

Thanks. I hope it all turns out well, too.

Thanks, also, RT.

Mostly this is just one of those things annoying enough that I feel a need to rant about it, but not really consequential in the big scheme of things.

Lynn, just posting to show support, I really do hope this situation will improve soon with the hearing fast approaching.

I don't know whether the youngsters will take care of the dog problem when their mom is gone, but it is not likely.  Hopefully, you will find ways to resolve or be protected from the aggressive dog problem.

Fingers crossed Lynn - It's hard for all us considerate folks on the forum to understand how a small minority of thoughtless people can make life so difficult and not even care. Very frustrating!

Maybe consider one of these?

http://www.680news.com/2014/05/16/milton-couple-wants-huge-backyard-barrier-torn-down/

Something about this just fills me with glee. It's smurfing gargantuan and definitely over kill. And I love every millimeter of it. However, there is one thing that lingers in my mind when viewing a "fence" such as this - cost. Fences are already a pretty penny, which I hate is cost that Lynn having to decide on, but that fence must have been in the tens of thousands. At any rate. I hope you don't need something as drastic as this, Lynn.

So...

Hmmm...

I just had a talk with my neighbor.

It started with their dog, snarling and snapping at me from the other side of the fence. Her eldest son was out on the deck. I told him that should there dog get loose and try to bite me, I was going to kill it.

And, just to be clear, that is completely within my legal right.

The son went inside. A few minutes later, the mother came over.

She asked me if I said that. I said I did. She started saying something, about whether or not the dog was loose. I cut her off, described to her the long list of criminal charges she has for not keeping animals pinned, she started saying something about how I couldn't talk to her like that. I slammed the door in her face.

Then she started saying she was going to beat my ass. I invited her to come try. She seemed hesitant to cross the property line to attempt it.

We are scheduling CCW classes soon.

I hate my idiot neighbor.

Just so you know, I calculate the odds of her being able to beat me in hand to hand at about 1 in 10,000. She doesn't scare me, but it does show just how crazy, and stupid, she is.

Yeah, have the recorder in your hand when you talk to her, don't make it obvious that you are recording.

If your phone doesn't have recording function, get a standalone recorder, they are dirt cheap nowadays.

All that threat from her would come in handy if she does something eventually.

Just be aware that in Canada, you couldn't use anything recorded without the other's consent in a court. Not so sure how that would go in the US.
