The higher the magnification, the more correction is required. So single, high mag lenses often have limited depth of field.  In lower magnification it's easier to correct those problems in a single lens.  This is one reason why my 10x  B+L Hastings Triplet Loupe was 55 bucks. It's a highly corrected, compound optical design.

Off topic a little bit, but after seeing both the old gray and newer clear mag glasses in the collectors knives, like X..XAVXLT $350 knife...has both glasses...

I got to thinking if the layers of a knife were arranged carefully and 2 mag glasses were kept a specific distance apart (on the same end of the knife obviously), perhaps with some kind of micro-adjust on one of them...this could act as a monocular or microscope, no? Using the 2 lenses together.

Only recently I realized that the clear plastic ones are not one piece, and the lens pops right out...seems like a good idea for service/repair especially since plastic will scratch easier...but I've never seen the lenses available for sale (though I'm guessing it's just a standard size that Vic orders from a supplier)

Some are one piece, others have a glass lens that can pop out.

Nice, I wish I'd picked a couple of those up when I had the chance. Are those scales heavy?
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Yes they are, with cellidor scales you could have two extra layers and still be lighter.

I thought I was having a pretty good day carrying these, a serrated master and a trapper in oak:

But then a very special package arrived... (teaser shot)

Then it became a very good day!
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

AHH, let me check my parts...Both of my clear ones have pop-out lenses. Is the 1-piece clear one 5x, and the 2-piece clear is 6x? And you're saying the 2-piece clear one has a glass lens? Sorry so many ?'s TY   :P
