Bored today, so wakizashi time :)
on: June 10, 2014, 02:24:59 PM
I picked up a few wallhangers a few weeks back very cheap, they are pre straight blade uk law us where kept up a loft, ive got about 7 swords but all kept hidden from the kids ,well as bored today and very hot and sunny i decided to hack off the rats tail from one of the katanas, i ordered a new handle from china a few weeks ago,it came complete with 2 bamboo pegs, ive only used one as will make another of these as was fun if not hard work as using hand tools, sorry forgot pic of tang as got carried away  :D its about 4 inches long,it took some fiddling and drilled holes without the seppa (spacer )in place and this made for a tight fit once i tapped the peg in,i shortened the saya (sheath) a few inches and need too youtube how to tie the sageo but its ok for now, next in going to use the wakizashi wallhanger to make a tanto, will order another handle  :tu: ok pics  :salute:

Paul, I never learned too much about the Japanese swordsmanship, but should the edge faced up when place in rack?  Or is there different meaning or etiquette for placing the edge down?

The katana was worn edge up in day to day activities and worn down in battle, wakizashi was worn edge down if worn as a daisho (long sword and short sword combo) could also be wakizashi and tanto,im no expert mate just what i read on the net, would love a old katana or wakizashi, one day  :tu:

Interesting

Cheers Paul

Its all the power of google tony  :D its a very interesting subject,

Think thursday ill add another 2 inches to the tang and add another peg, will shorten the blade but wakis came in many lengths short and long,my tanto will be short so will go together nicely  :tu: ,might do a wakizashi next with longer katana handle, like a shinobigatana (ninja sword)  :tu: ive got a handforged ninjato 80's Hollywood style but with round tsuba (handguard)

If you are looking to add to your collection, a Musashi Katana is highly rated for the price point. In fact, you can't beat them.

Paul,

Thanks for the answer, I am used to seeing people wear it edge up for both Aikido and Iaido, it does make awful lot of sense to wear it edge down for 'battle' or on horse.

In terms of storage, I mostly seen them edge up in dojo or museum, and was told it may harm the edge in a long run if placed edge down...but I am no expert on these topic either, and it is interesting to read what you have shared.  :D
