Leatherman Wingman with bit Driver
on: February 23, 2015, 12:38:34 AM
Hello everyone this is my first mod. I'm the proud owner of a Leatherman Charge TTi and Wingman. I bought the Wingman for my EDC and the Charge during the weekends. The first inconvenience was that the wingman does not have bit driver and I use several types of screw driver. First I thought to buy the Wave or Surge but I decide that I could mod the Wingman. This is the result.

The bit driver were from a Wave bought on Ebay, after some investigation I discovered that there is not much difference from the form factors of the "big" multitools in Leatherman, after I recieved the Wingman I made a test with my Charge.

Basically I only used the torx to open the wingman and a Dremel tool.

So you cannibalised a Wave to mod Wingman?  :ahhh

Man, I though I was the only one who did crazy stuff like that (1908 awl into a 93mm Alox)

:tu:  hack on

LOL, I bought the spare parts on Ebay. The seller said that he found several Wave parts on a garage sale.

My first option was the Wave but like many of you I love to mod and use my hands so I bought the Wingman and the spare parts.

The bit changer is an asset to any tool.  Nice mod, even if it did come from a Wave  :pok:  though I've never liked the precision driver - IMHO a waste of valuable tool real estate.  Unfortunately I don't have a spare bit changer.

My favourite accessory, well only accessory, is the Removeable Bit Driver kit.  So for commonality with my other LM MTs with standard 3D Phillips I adapted the Wingman driver.

Note the missing screw and empty tool bay - work in progress

First of all thank you everybody most of the inspiration was this forum. I actually use a lot the precision driver. I’m control engineer and several devices use very small screws, this feature in the Charge saved me a couple of times. After I got the spare parts I used a Socket Hex Bit Holder with 1/4-Inch Drive adapted to the flat screw driver of the Wingman, this solution worked but felt really cheese. Your approach looks a much more consistent when someone does not have spare parts.
Greetings from Mexico.

... I actually use a lot the precision driver ...

That's the beauty of modding.  Make a better tool.

I've added a precision driver to the bit changer kit.   Was a small hex from a precision driver kit.  Ground on two opposite faces, epoxy encapsulated and trimmed to size.  Could have used the LM bit but TBH mine, particularly the crosspoint end, wasn't well formed. The precision keychain dangly can also provide a bit source.

I just tried this mod, but I couldn't get the pins out easily on a Wave or Charge.  How hard did you have to tap to get them out?

They tend to be a little tough to get out in general.
I usually unscrew it all the way, screw the pivot screw back in 2-3 turns, and smack the tool, protruding screw first, into the table.

I just now realized how bad that sounds for the tool.

That's what I did, but I was afraid to really whack it for fear of bunging threads. I'll try again.

It could be that the flats on pivot may be stuck to the frame. Try a little twist while tapping.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?
