Zoloft
on: May 31, 2015, 03:09:20 AM
So I have always felt with depression, always hid it from people. Recently I had a doc appt and finally blurted out what's been going on to my doc.  She prescribed zoloft to me. Anyone have experience with this? Not really a fan of meds... Figure I should at least try it though.

Follow the doctor's instructions to the letter and if you have issues, let him/her know immediately.

That having been said, depression is a serious illness and not something to take lightly.  Fortunately it is quite treatable and I'm sure you will find a dramatic difference in your energy levels and outlook when you start taking the medication.  It's been years since anyone I know has been on Zoloft, but there are lots of very effective treatments.  I've seen Paxil prescribed more often lately, but I'm not sure if there's a reason for one over the other or not.

Good on you for taking that first, hard,  almost impossible step and admitting there's an issue that needs to be dealt with.

Very happy to hear you took this step.  I would also agree with Boss and follow what your doc says.  Make sure to keep her up to speed on everything thats going on.  Again I'm glad you took this step as there is no need to "battle" it alone or without the proper care.

We are here routing for you.

Thanks guys appreciate it. Have struggled for many years with it. Finally decided enough was enough, especially after having a couple fire/ems calls that have bothered me for years... Got to say, its a huge weight lifted of my chest after speaking to my doc about it. If you have any doubts about talking to your doc, just go for it. Was way easier than I could have ever thought.

While everyone is applauding, I"ll toss in a caution.

That abnormal thinking, anxiety, paranoia and delusions listed on the side effects are no joke. No one wants to be part of the (so say the drug companies) 10% where this stuff backfires. The worst part is, you might not notice. So if anyone says you're acting differently, it might be cause for alarm. If you have any firearms, large knives, mobile power tools, heavy equipment, it might not be a bad idea to secure them with a friend who trusts you enough to know that if you glitch because of this stuff that he won't take you acting like a maniac the wrong way. At least for a few weeks.

I definitely have my better half and a few fire buddies keeping an eye on me. I feel pretty confident in that they will not hesitate to step up and say if I change. I am on a VERY low dose to start with as well.

That was why I said initially to keep in close contact with your doctor.  You never know with this stuff, but it is at least mostly safe or it wouldn't be prescribed or available.

This is the first drug prescribed for depression by GP's in the UK, as all the evidence points to it being the safest in general.

Appreciate everyone caring so much. So far so good today. I have noticed I am a bit more hungry... Although being 25 at 5ft 6in, 130lb soaking wet since I was 15, and being extremely active that doesn't seem like an issue lol.

Update. So far so good, haven't felt much different but haven't had any issues either.  Thanks for all the support guys. Was a very hard step to finally talk about it.

Thank you guys! Appreciate it. I wish now I hadn't hid fire calls that have bothered me, and other things that have bothered me. Although I am glad I finally stepped up and spoke, I wish I had done it sooner.

Yea, but you can't think about what if. Just think about voicing what you need to now and go from there.

I finally saw a pshrink early this year, and she prescribed me an anti-anxiety med.  It worked but not all that well, so  two weeks ago I started a different one.  This one has kicked in fully and the result is noticeable.  As a bonus, the new med is also used for pain, so the bad leg is feeling better than it has in quite a while. :tu:  The best part is that the med calms me down without giving me a stoned feeling.  I didn't quit drinking to get smurfed up on other things.....

You are a young man and whats important is you DID something, you are DOING something which is great.  Sadly there are far too many men who are not and suffer thru life needlessly.

I'm glad you are feeling better and wish you continued success in your treatment.

Sorry I'm late catching up on this one Josh!

Firstly a big  :salute: for having the courage to take the massive step of asking for help. Big respect!

There's not much I can add to what the guys have already said, except to keep an eye out for side effects. When I went on my blood pressure meds,I got hit with stuff that hits only 25% of users. Build the relationship with your doc.

Good on you mate :salute:
