Help with Spirit mfg. dates
on: November 02, 2015, 03:15:32 PM
I'm trying to learn more about some of the variations of the SwissTool Spirit, in particular some of the dates of different variations. SakWiki has some good info but there are also some subtleties. Introduced in 2004 before the tang stamp change of 2005, the first years appear to have the older 4 line VSSR stamp, while all the later ones seem to have the 3 line Swiss Made stamp. Since there were no tool variations in '04, that's a start, but there are some other things.

What year approximately did they change the handle stamp from the shield beside the name to the shield above the name?  ???

What year approximately did they stop stamping the shield on the pliers?  ??? I don't have an example of this, but read on the forum that the newest ones don't have the stamp.

Maybe there can be a dating timeline developed (like the SwissTool thread) so approximate dates of manufacture for the Spirit can be figured out? (Probably someone more skilled than I :ahhh:pok:

Thanks for any help with this!

I like the sound of a dedicated Spirit info thread.  :)

I've got two variants - a Spirit and a BO Sprit X CC.  The Spirit (purchased in early 2014) has a three line tang stamp, no shield on the pliers and the shield above the name on the handle.  The BO X CC (received as a warranty replacement mid-2015) has no shield on the pliers and the shield next to the name on the handle. ???  I don't think this helps at all. :D

I think that, in typical Vic fashion, they probably mixed parts again. Why wouldn't they? :D

Thanks H, I think it actually does! The BO Spirit S came out in '07 which means there are both types of handle stamps available for warranty work in the BO models, so the CC pliers could have been put with older handles during assembly. Maybe you have a rare one there!

On the other hand maybe all the handles were thrown into a common bin and dating is impossible...

From what I gather so far '09-'10 is the transitional period for the handle variation, again only maybe, I need to find more examples to firm that one up. All the stock photos are useless mashups, so actual photos are needed, and there are a lot of good ones here at MTO, just a matter of finding them.  :tu:

So far 2004 only has VSSR stamp (most likely), 2005-'09ish Swiss Made tang and shield beside name, and 2010ish forward shield above name. Still trying to determine the plier stamp, all the RT's still had it in 2010 from what I have found so far.  :salute:

So I should quit while I'm behind then?

No, not at all. In fact I urge to continue with your quest and I tell you that I admire your courage :D

So according to North Man's post in the owner's thread, the shield was removed in 2010. I think this is probably correct, the RT seems to be in the transitional era. Still trying to confirm with an example of an RT without the pliers stamp if I can find one.  :tu:

Thanks H! Wow, that confirms it.  :tu:

So stampless pliers I assume are post 2010 (for the most part).
