Incoming PM soon regarding nailnicks.....   :salute:

Speaking of which... another little bit of progress. Initial shaping of new awl, nailnick cut as well.....

Still have to finalize shape and sharpen, etc. It's going to be a beast.....

Nailnick matched to same size and location as the knife blade.....

Come on guys :pok: a 2D Phillips is better than no Phillips at all :gimme: :D

Granted the Shard has a better Phillips than the Wingman but the one on the Wingman does work ;) If not that type then the type that is on the Micra  :D

Ok, you win with the mention of the Micra.  Almost redeems the wingman comment...   :D

Thank you, Poncho. Initially, I knew going into this that I wanted a knife and awl for sure. The other two tools were undecided. While, I did want scissors, I also knew the work involved and pondered the effort vs. reward. At that time, I thought perhaps one of each, both a phillips and a flathead driver. For me and my EDC, I don't like to have just one or the other, if possible. Inevitably I ended up going with scissors since they are an integral part of my daily tasks. There has been no definitive planned outcome of this tool, it has been evolving in real-time. Already it has taken a different route than I initially thought.....

Plus we have no idea what Evil really has in mind anyways :pok: He may come out with something even better that will blow our minds away (as he usually does :tu: ) :D :b2t:
You and me both, lol. I too am undecided what tool I will create for the remaining slot. I am steering towards a bit driver based on the one that I made for Shear Evil, which is an interpretation of the bit adapter I made years ago. My Urban Driver is a standard 1/4 bit kit that I originally made as a matching set for my Urban Trekker that is always in my EDC bag. I have actually been using it with my Crunch, Micra, Shear Evil and more than likely this tool as well. Rather than limit myself to just one flathead or phillips for this tool, by going this route I can now have access to a multitude of driving options.....

I created this 2D 1/4" square bit adapter for my bit kit years ago.....

Here you can see it set up on Project Skeletool with a socket.....

Thank you, mercury. Modified carbide cutter on drill press for channels. The rest all done manually with various carbide and diamond bits.....

I knew you would have something more awesome planned or something in mind than anything I suggested  :ahhh  :tu:
We'll have to see how it comes out if I attempt to make it.....

Awl given an edge today. Subtle taper of thickness towards the tip. At its widest point it can produce 1/2" holes.....

Nice rounded transition at base of grind.....

Better view of new edge.....

Another view.....

I know. Can't see my reflection on them sides....  :D

This particular design has served me well for years now. I often get asked why I make them the way that I do, why they are not like the typical LM awls with the sewing eye, etc. I refer you to this old post... Best Awl Shape and Design

Not shiny enough...
I take my shining seriously......  ;)

No progress today. Spent every spare moment trying to keep cool. Temp broke 85F here today, which I am not used to. I was melting, lol.....

As mentioned earlier on, all tools, including the handles will be heat treated. Once I finish the fourth tool that will be the next step. Is it absolutely necessary? Simply put, yes. You will never achieve the correct properties of the metals being used unless you do so... and it has to be done correctly. A simple example: It is the difference between a piece of metal becoming hard and brittle vs. soft and springy or anywhere in between. If you happen to be working with or modifying metal that has already been heat treated, if you are careful not to ruin the temper, it will still be very usable. This is not one of those cases. Everything is being created from raw materials.....

It sure is a lot easier than having to give an explanation each time I make a new awl, lol.....

Going back, I noticed the plier pivots do not rest the same against the handles as other LM's do.

Is this because you prefer butterfly style opening? Or will the tightened screw pivots be enough to hold it closed?

You are correct. I changed that specific distance by design. The ramps on the plier pivots gradually grow in height and I did not want them to contact the handles as early as they normally do. The way I have it set up is that the ramps and the handles only contact one another about the last 20% or so. So, the handles open smoothly until the very last moment. Then you feel the typical pressure of the plier rests making contact against the frames until hitting the stops. I actually do prefer the looser butterfly style opening, as you refer to it, only on my Wave and my Surge, but that is only because I created handle locks on both of them that make them impossible to open unless released. Normally, it is indeed the pressure of the plier pivot bolts that helps keep the handles closed. Such will be the case with this tool. The plier rests, ramps or stops serve no function in keeping the handles closed, only open. I hope that I explained all of that in a way that makes sense.....
