Technically not a SAK, but I used a demo knife (all-steel, Camillus scout knife, less refined than a Pioneer, but same tool arrangement) to cut some irrigation tubing to size, and adjust a small hose clamp over one of the system's elbows. It's what was at hand, and worked well for the repair.

Day 05:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

If yesterday was the small Ambassador, today is the LARGE 130mm Hunter Pro, its blade large enough and most assuredly robust enough to rightly cleave a bagel for breakfast. The trick to slicing bagels without slicing one's hand is to stop when the knife is about half way across, then rotate the bagel while continuing to slice keeping the blade edge about half way across until roughly 180 degrees rotation has cleanly sliced the bagel through. Trying to slice all the way across has resulted in more coffee and bagel shop baristas bleeding profusely when the bread knife leaps through the last bit o' bagel into their palm. Not good for business, makes a biological hazard mess of the food preparation counter, and ruins the barista's day. If in doubt, wear a Kevlar glove. If you do any speed skating, short track in particular, the Kevlar gloves for that will do just fine. Nearly all coffee and bagel shops and bagel slicing machines now as a result of Worker's Compensation claims and OSHA investigations.

Note: the OD green pouch is the longer one. There are two lengths, one for 111mm and the other for 130mm. Stock number for this longer one that will fit RangerGrip and the Hunter Pro properly: 4.0837.4 If you buy one of these pouches, ensure you're getting the proper length for the knife you're going to use it with.

Elsie again, the lack of scissors is the challenge for me.

Might have to disqualify myself soon.
Stay strong Twiglet - Don't quit this as well.  :pok:  :D

Going steady with the SI, the lack of scissors is appealing.

That's not a mod.  My tinker has been estimated to be from between 1963 to 1968 and that is apparently how they did it back then.

Hey guys, I don't think I am going to post a picture here every day for 30 days. Photographing my SAKs is something I only tend to do when the mood strikes. I did it every day for a few days for this challenge, but quickly got bored with the concept. I will however be completing the challenge in spirit, as I intend to carry a single two-layer SAK for the rest of the month, and probably beyond October as well. I tend to carry the same SAK every day, and right now that is my red Cadet. As my possible final photographic submission to this challenge, I present you with my SAK, watch and dog.

Either would work I suppose, I carried my Compact on day 2 and butchered several cans with it.

I have it queued up for tomorrow, maybe I can avoid tinned food. :tu:

He is a super smart and attentive dog. He's an Australian shepherd mixed with a little border collie and Queensland heeler. He's only 10 months old and he's already very well behaved.

Day 8:

Actually used the pioneer quite a bit today. Opened a plastic plant pot of cat grass to transplant, also did brakes on the Jeep and opened any and all packaging with the main blade.

I did want and need a nail file later today; so I guess today would have been a perfect day for a classic SD.  Oh well. Only one at a time.

Have you have been using the can opener in the clockwise direction around the can top, the same as you would with a Wenger eagle beak can opener (rotate the can CCW)? It's opposite the counter-clockwise direction used for the standard Victorinox opener with small tip driver (rotate can CW). The correct direction wasn't obvious to me until I tried to use a combo to open a can and started to mangle the top going in the wrong direction. Helps a little if the first punch through the top doesn't push the opener all the way into the can. Just a thought.

Edit:
If that still doesn't work well for you . . . there's this method . . .

Yes John, I have used the combo tool that way, rotating the can CCW, but I also use the regular opener that way, which is considered backwards, piercing a new hole with every bite, and this is how I am used to using it. The regular can opener works so good for me this way that I don't even have a dedicated opener anymore. Using the combo tool backwards it's almost impossible to open anything cleanly, and while I can make the combo tool work, I might as well be using a Leatherman opener, which I think is equally bad. Just spoiled I guess...  :D

Also, the spoon method looks terribly inefficient, considering I have cut the top of of cans with a 111mm OH blade before, which was surprisingly easy, if somewhat messy...  :salute:

Cheers!

My Trailmaster abuse was in this thread. >> http://forum.multitool.or....msg736388.html#msg736388 The knife is still in great condition!  :)

 :like:

There is an easier way though, albeit still hard on the blade. Once a starter hole near the edge is punched or worn through near the edge, then push the point into it and rock the blade back and forth keeping some force on the blade back and the blade wedged against the edge as you rock it toward you to keep the cutting edge working the can top. Having a whetstone or other sharpener handy afterward is highly recommended. A Scoutmaster showed this method using a Barlow knife when I was quite young - a means to open a can if you didn't have one of the ubiquitous four-blade camping knives with a can opener (civilian version of a MIL-K-818). He and the others who were WWII and Korean War vets taught us all sorts of MacGyver tricks for living in wilderness with minimal tools.

I had not seen the spoon method used before. Personally, I liked the concrete curb method in the second video, and have actually seen that done during my U.S. Army career with C-Ration cans on large igneous rocks smoothed some by weather (e.g. granite is one type). Sandstone also works quite well, as does limestone, both of which which are sedimentary rock. Won't get the can open quite as fast as with a can opener, but it's faster than you would think.

Recommendation: get a P-38 (or larger P-51) and put it on your keyring; tape it shut after it's aged as they won't stay shut after the hinge has worn. They're small and work exceptionally well. I opened countless C-ration cans with a P-38 (as well as with a Woodsman SAK). It will prevent having to sharpen the Trailmaster blade.

The combo doesn't cut the can lid quite as clean as the Wenger or Victorinox standard openers do, but the can edge is still reasonably clean if the combo is kept firmly against it on the way around. I've gotten better with the combo over time.
