Made a knife today...
on: April 29, 2017, 10:25:27 PM
So, decided to do "make your own Higonokami" course today. It was a long day, but I'm really happy with the product. It was also great fun.

We started off with a 3-layer steel (hard core and softer outside layers).

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

It was a forging course... but the actual forging was very little. Making the steel a bit thinner, making a nose for the thumb-lever and giving the tip its basic shape. Overall, pretty easy, especially since you can straighten it out rather easily.
Also remember, the camera adds at least 50kg.

Next we bent the brass for the handle... I was surprised how well that worked, it did sit almost flush on the table (take that spirit :P).
Then we added the slit for the blade, its pretty older brother insisted on joining for the photo. With the belt-grinder, the handle was quickly put into shape and some file-work was added. The blade too was ground into shape.

Next came the hardest part, filing the edge. The three layer steel was a great advantage here. Not only was the soft outer steel easy to file, but you could also see when you got to the harder steel.
Put together it already looked good.

Polishing the handle and peening. Peening is the only thing I did not do myself (for time reasons).

Here it is next to my friends (mine is the lower one). I really like how his blade turned out.

Its so pretty :woohoo:

Ok, that was a really cool project and I get to take home a knife I have made myself AND that is in really good working condition. There are some flaws of course, like the edge-stop when closed is missing.

Yes, from next year on, they will be issued to the Swiss Armed Forces instead of those bulky, utilitarian Victorinox blocks.

He also offers a course for a damascene kitchen knife, so I might be doing that next. But I rather stay to small knifes, size makes everything much harder.

Yeah, I was fully expecting to bring home a price-ugly piece of metal, but thanks to good instructions it turned out really well. I also think the 3-layer steel helped a lot. The softer sides made the filing much easier AND gave visual aid when you hit the center.

I wholeheartedly agree... however, if you see at half-time that it will turn out nicely, that gives you a huge motivational boost. Making the tedious filing and grinding work much more fun.

I was thinking on putting (gluing) a toothpick or match in. But a piece of string might work too, thanks for the tip.
