Kitchen cutlery for better or worse...........
on: April 08, 2018, 06:56:38 PM
After searching a bit I didn't find any threads on kitchen cutlery so I thought I would post a few up. Hope this is OK and if not the moderators can delete it.
While my main thrust in knife collecting has been pocket knives I am open to all forms of edged tools. After more than 60 years of accumulating all manner of them I now choose to gather in whatever happens to,"trip my trigger" at the moment.
My first encounter with kitchen cutlery was in the form of a cased set of stag handled and silver ferruled carving knife, fork and sharpening steel by Landers,Frary,& Clark Aetna Works.Probably paid too much for it at the time but the stag handles were absolute perfection.I still use it to carve turkey or ham on the holidays.
I then came across some old ivory handled table knives that I intended to use the handles to repair a couple of ivory folding knives. I couldn't really bear to destroy them so I put them away after sealing up some cracks in the ivory.Just came across them yesterday and in doing research on the name found out they were made in the 1850's!
Since that time I have acquired many different types of kitchen cutlery including paring knives;steak knife sets;small and large butcher knives and some other special purpose knives such as grapefruit knives;one for removing pin feathers on fowl;and a few whose purpose escapes me.I even got some knives made of clear plastic when plastic was a fairly novel item to make knives from.
Anyway this first post will concentrate mainly on carving sets and other sets of knives.Maybe later I will expand it to include some of the more bizarre specialty knives.I might even get some feedback as to what their actual purpose is for.
First up is the set that started it all:Landers,Frary,&Clark Aetna Works carving set in stag and sterling silver.
Second is a closeup of the stag handles.
Third is an American Cutlery Co. carving set.Unfortunately it came without a box.
Third is a carving set made for Sears,Roebuck & Co. with synthetic handles. Not sure who made it but it is good quality.
Last is

Thanks for the kind words.Actually I can't think of anything offhand. I'm not really into collecting military related knives(although I have a lot of them)because there were so many fakes out there. I just enjoy collecting knives;among other things.I'm still working at my craft(sign artist/pinstriper or as the English call it coach liner)at the age of 74 and working on my vintage automobile when I can.Don't smoke or drink or go night clubbing so I need some type of vice to keep me in line(lol).Knives do that for me.

I love kitchen knives and I actually have a kitchen knife thread around here somewhere.

Since my move and having a house full of kids that destroy kitchen knives I do not get to use my nice kitchen knives anymore but off the top of my head these are the brands of kitchen knives I have.

Kershaw
Spyderco
Victorinox
KAI
Al Mar (my favorite)

I’m sure there is more but that’s what I can remember at the moment. I love cooking and I love knives so naturally having quality cutlery is a must and very enjoyable.

I love seeing all your cutlery and it makes me want to bring mine out for use again. Sadly like I said the kids would get their hands on them and destroy them.

The single set of knives I brought out when I moved was a Victorinox pairing set because they are excellent knives but I wouldent be to mad if they got ruined. That’s exactly what happened! I come home to see two of the four knives from the set sitting in water in the sink, then I remove them to wash and dry and notice there are chips out of the edge as well as the tip of one is bent at almost a 90 degree angle! I’m pretty sure one of the kids stabbed the knife into our metal counter top and bent the crap out of it. Lesson learned on my part I guess.  ::)

Second:Two different oyster shucking knives.
Third:Seven different poultry shears.
Fourth:A double edged(saw blade and regular)knife advertising Bixby Jet-Oil shoe polish!

A few more: Still have many.
First:A massive knife Marked Englishtown Crafts:The raised front section of the blade is a surface apparently used to hammer through frozen foods or tough joints.Knife is 1/4" thick steel!
Second:A HUGE Forschner butcher knife. The blade is a full twelve inches long.
Third:An unmarked huge old knife. Background is(as usual) one inch(25.4mm)squares to show size.
Fourth:Another huge unmarked knife with a blunt tip.It appears to have been made that way.

Last batch for now:
First:A Robeson cutlery Co."Red Pig" knife.So-called because of the emblem on the handle.
Second:An unmarked knife(tool)for harvesting beets.
Third:A very old Joseph Elliot butcher knife with a handle made of rings of wood and brass.
Fourth:An unmarked sawback knife likely made from a power hacksaw blade.with an aluminum handle

I still have a bunch of other knives and may post them at a later date.

That is sad that you have to keep your kitchen tools hidden away. In my home there is just my wife and myself and all of our children are grown. The oldest is 50. The grandchildren (and now great grandchildren)are very respectful when they come to visit. Confidentially I think they are scared to death of my voice which can be somewhat high volume when I get aggravated. When it is time to clean up after meals I am in charge of that task.Wood handled knives are washed by hand as are other types of cutlery. My wife loads the dish washer but leaves the silverware to me.
