Ron Who - Day 18 - Hubertus and Ruddy Darters

As some of you know, my real hobby is dragonfly photography.
I wanted a pic with a dragonfly on my knife but this is as close as I got.
There´s a tandem of Ruddy Darters in the pic somewhere.

Love a Case Trapper.  :iagree:

Ok folks, I get it. Again, I wasn’t looking to argue or debate it. Know that. I was just seeking opinion and clarification. I see what you are talking about.

I really like my little Boker, but if it doesn’t met the eligibility of this challenge then it stays in the drawer.

I’ve got a few I haven’t tried yet.

I think the Tech Tools are really really good. Caught the Tech Tool City 4 in CF scales on sale at SMKW for $18(must have been a stock mistake). I wouldn't have ever tried one out at the normal price before then. Now I know they're worth the cost and I love the scale choices they use. Very modern, especially the carbon fiber. :o

Gotta love those little no name knives.
If I carry a $50+ Case knife or something, I usually end up dinging the blade. If I carry one of the no-name trads, never hurt the blade.

I had been toting the Sodbuster around in a front pocket caddy. Switched to this back pocket caddy for the past few days, and I think I prefer this one.  :dunno:

That's a pretty cool one!  Do appreciate the openness.

How do you like the Svord? What work to bring it up to speed? Fit and finish or ??  :like: :tu:
I do like it quite a bit, with the decent price, it really is a cool piece of cultural/traditional to try.  Just that the QC in general is kinda lacking, and of the handful of Svord I own, each has its own quarks(uneven handle, grind, machine marks, blade touching pivot, etc)

Personally, I just see them as cool little knife projects to furnish, and don't mind that little work the least bit. :D

I agree with Jack on this one.

As for the demo knife I think it's fine and I would also say that a SAK Soldier technically would be therefore as well. It's really the same knife just made in a different country.

This is where it kinda gets into a gray area in my view. Are SAKs traditional knives? No; but there are many SAKs that mimic traditional knives, and many traditional patterns that mimic the utility of an SAK.  There are lots of SAKs (Pioneer, Soldiers, Executive, Classic, Recruit, Cadet, Secretary, Settler/Solo) that are similar to, or identical to many traditional patterns. Camillus and Schrade have both made and sold Classic clones. The M1891, M1908, and M1951 Soldiers all look very traditional and have bolsters. Camillus and Schrade both made Camper patterns with saws; thus making them comparable to a Farmer.  Victorinox has also made traditional pruner/hawkbill folders with rosewood scales that are not like any standard SAK; and are really a traditional knife; but it isn't an SAK anyway.  Most Alox is really similar to traditional camper's knives.

True enough. The Settler/Solo or Florist are great examples. There is nothing specifically SAK about the patterns other than the fact of manufacture. I think it might come into question once you add the second layer and the specific SAK scales. Not that it isn't traditional but that it has its own sub-category within the genre which makes it unique enough to have its own identity.

Oh and one day I'll have a Settler, one day. I realise I'll have to either make it myself or pay someone to do so.

The way I do it is to quote the post > copy > back button > quote the next post > paste and copy > back and so on.

Here is your invitation for a month-long sojourn into the wonderful world of Traditional pocket knives!

(Image removed from quote.)

We’ve got quite a few fans of the traditional folding knife here at MTo, and Barry and I were hoping to have some fun with these knives in July. Toward that end, we are setting up a 30-day Traditional folder challenge for July, 2019. If you don't have a traditional yet, there is still time to pick one up, perhaps second hand, and try out the knife your Grandfather might have used and depended on.

This is meant to be fun, but there will be a few rules, as always, for these types of challenges:

1. Carry and use a Traditional Folder for the month of July (the 1st through the 30th)
2. While accessory tools are permitted as necessary, participants are expected to use a traditional folder as their primary knife/tool
3. Post a photo and a brief description of how the ‘trad’ got used (or not) for that day.
4. It used to be the case (no pun intended) a person was lucky to have just one cherished pocket knife and would use that knife exclusively. Barry and I will both be using our cherished Sodbusters exclusively for this challenge. While the rules allow the carry of various traditional knives over the course of the 30-day period, we’d like to encourage participants to use just one knife for the entire challenge. Get to know that Traditional! How well does that model do, day-in and day-out?

(Image removed from quote.)

Nothing is certain yet, but there will likely be a couple of sub-challenges and a GAW or two during this July challenge. We’ll see. In any event, there is a badge to be earned!

(Image removed from quote.)

Or, if you plan on using a GEC folder, you could go for the 30-GEC challenge….

(Image removed from quote.)

So, pick up a new traditional or sharpen the one you have and let’s plan for a fun July using these classic knives the way they were meant to be!  :tu:

Thanks Steve, you da man
