How the heck are people getting such clear photos? I have a 8 mp camera and cannot get shots worth a damn. I guess I should read the book that came with it.

I'm no expert either but I think the fact these are taken outside, in good light, helps enormously.  Doesn't stop them from being really great shots though.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

How old is your camera John ? I got my one just before I went to Canada last year it is a Samsung s630 6MP & cost around $70aus=$5us :P , it takes heaps better pics than our other camera, a Fuji, that cost $400+ but is 4yrs old. I kid you not the Samsung does all the hard work I just put it on Macro & snap away.The new digital compacts are the "ducks guts".  :D

4 monthes old  It is an Olympus and actually isntbad. I just today played with the new tripod, and I am learning to use macro.

I do carry a KF4 from time to time, but carrying a Charge TTi doesn't leave much to worry about tbh!
