Climber Lite with removable LED module
on: April 15, 2020, 10:02:28 PM
I’ve been thinking about this mod for about 6 months, so eventually gave it a go.

The idea is that the LED is a great little close-proximity light, but has 2 major issues:

1. You can’t get water near it, and
2. You can’t use the LED independently of the SAK

So what if you could clip it off?  :dunno:

The LED module is used without opening it out of the SAK, and it only rotates 90deg to expose the battery compartment. So I figured a simple cut-out slot will allow the module to be lifted out when rotated up, but will still keep the module retained when it’s down.

The problem is that the liners and tools could all slip along the exposed pivot if you simply remove the module, so a tube spacer is needed to keep everything still tight when the LED is out.

I found a nickel-plated brass ferrule the perfect size, 2.5mm hole, 4mm outer diameter. Just needed trimming down to the correct length of 2.9mm to act as a spacer.

Here you can see an original ferrule and the spacer completed. I drilled out the module to 4mm and did a test fit. Then cut the slot, making this slightly less than 4mm so there’s a positive click when it clips onto the spacer.  :tu:

Next was to reassemble everything...

I used a Spartan Lite as the donor SAK, and added a scissors layer that I had left over from another build.

Victorinox don’t do this config. The closest is the 5 layer Huntsman Lite, but this is getting a little big for EDC.

With the inline Phillips, this is effectively an Explorer with the LED instead of the magnifier. And now that the LED is removable, why not have a magnifier that can slot in?

So I followed a similar slot direction as used on the Rescue Tool’s removable blade, and it works, but...as the Lite models swap around the Phillips to the opposite end, the magnifier does not close fully. But you can use it in the open position.

What else could you clip into this new mounting point?  :dunno:

Very happy with the result. You do lose backspring tension on the Phillips when the module is out, but I did not want to use a larger diameter spacer otherwise the slotted area would be too weak. It’s a small compromise for a far better tool imo.  :salute:

This is an excellent mod!

What else could you clip into this new mounting point?

A USB stick? Like they do on the 58mm models?
A fork or spork, (would have to be longer though), like a hobo knife.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Thanks guys.  :hatsoff:

Yes, USB may be an option. Maybe even a small spork.

It’s really easy to clip on and off. Victorinox use a good quality plastic that’s not brittle, so it snaps over the pivot with a good positive click, and won’t fall out as it’s locked in when closed.

Here’s a video I did to show it better: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=6uFWWtP6HUo

I think they already did a similar system on the Rescue Tool...so it’s not so original. Just not a common feature for Vic to have removable tools.

Yeah, awlso with the USB models. Still, it's the first with the LED.
