I know I said I wasn't participating...but I have noticed nobody posted Les Stroud as their Wild man posting...so here goes...

Les Stroud.

Les Stroud by Chako, on Flickr

Les Stroud (born October 20, 1961) is a Canadian survival expert, filmmaker and musician best known as the creator, writer, producer, director, cameraman and host of the television series Survivorman. After a short career behind the scenes in the music industry, Stroud became a full-time wilderness guide, survival instructor and musician based in Huntsville, Ontario. Stroud has produced survival-themed programming for The Outdoor Life Network, The Discovery Channel, The Science Channel, and YTV. The survival skills imparted from watching Stroud's television programs have been cited by several people as the reason they lived through harrowing wilderness ordeals.

The above was copied from this website:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Stroud

I really enjoyed watching Les's Survivorman show which I watched through 7 seasons. He has a few knives and an unfortunate multi-tool made by Camillus called the Engage that popularized  classic thread on MT.O titled...Engage test to destruction by Lynn LeFey. If you haven't read it...it is epic and well worth a read...or a re-read.

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,55957.0.html

Despite all of that, at a time when Bear Grylls was showing folks how to not survive, Les Stroud's show gave a much better basis for how to survive. Just for that reason, I like Les Stroud.

Here is the tool I always pack with me whenever I go hiking...meet the Shrade Tough Navi-tool.

Why do I like this oddity, because it packs a lot in a not that large package. There is a great compass with declination adjustments. It is a good size and is super easy to read. There is a hidden compartment which I tend to stash a Bic lighter inside. It fits great. There is also a bit of room inside to put some band-aids or something equally small. There is a signal mirror, a good survival whistle, and a PE knife, saw, a nice sized pair of scissors, Can opener, bottle opener, Phillips and flat head screwdriver. Rounding this out is a not that bright red light that is perfect for keeping your night vision and works great when doing map work. A nice belt clip rounds out the Navi-tool. I tend to clip mine to a backpack strap.

You can see the Bic peeking out of its compartment as I have the lid partly open.

Les Stroud.

Great inclusion!   :tu:

In a genre full of actors, Les did a great job conveying a sense of reality. I don't think I've seen all his shows, but I did like the ones I got to view.  :tu:

Adventure Photo:

Taken at Lake Superior Provincial park along highway 17 located between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa Ontario Canada.

Here is their website:

On this particular trip a few years ago, the better hand and I spent the day out at the provincial park walking the trails and seeing a lot of the beautiful northern Lake Superior shoreline. This photo was taken at Old Woman Bay. Yes, I did have my Navi-Tool with me.

Adventure Photo:

Tasmania is a great hiking location, with temperate rain forest, costal and alpine destinations aplenty to explore.
One of my favourite areas and the one I've been to 4 times, is the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. This photo doesn't do it justice (most of my hiking pics are on Facebook), but in 2010 we had planned a winter hike into the park. Just before our trip, an intense Low Pressure system brought snow and rain, and record wave heights off the West coast of the state. With Bushwalker Weather Alerts from the Bureau of Meteorology we had to decide whether to postpone our trip, or go. As the conditions were supposed to ease we chose to go. As we were hiking in up the steep bit to the plateau we passed a couple of guys hiking out. They'd been dumped on by snow the night before and chose not to stay. We could see their prints coming from directions not where the trail was, so thankfully they hadn't gotten lost by their detour. We had hoped to get further into the park, but once we got to the pictured spot and the slow going due to snow, we chose to stop at the first campsite which is just over the ridge in the foreground, closer to the "gate" between the mountains in the cloud. The following morning was sunny and beautiful, and a fourth mate hiked in and met us at the camp, following our footprints. Then after lunch we hiked (snow ploughed) through untouched snow to where we were hoping to get to the day before, but just as a day trip, leaving all our camp set up where we were already. When we left the next day we hadn't seen anybody else, we had the place all to ourselves.

Adventure Knife - hopefully people can see the pic from google photos...

The one that started it for me, my first real SAK, my red Huntsman has been on every hike with me that I can remember, though I'll probably retire it now and use the newer blue one or another SAK in the future :salute:

FTFY  :salute:.

He designed 3 knives with Helle, the Temagami (of which 2 versions exist, stainless and carbon), the Mândra and the Wabakimi.

Still hoping TG will enter, too.......

I'm working on it, took some pics of my favorite knife this weekend, thought about who I would pick as "Wildman" (one of the options I had, Les Stroud, is gone by now  :-\), searched my old photo bucket account (pain in the *ss) for pics of an adventure I remembered...

And since I no longer have a working laptop, I have to do all the posting with my smartphone, and I hate posting with a smartphone, it takes ages for me to type out a long post (like this one  ;))...

But I'll make sure to get it done in time  ;).

I believe this is a Polaris:

(Image removed from quote.)

I sometimes forget the names of some knife models....hard enough to keep track of awl the SAK models! But I'm 99% sure this is a Polaris. Gossman makes a simple knife that is simply excellent.  :tu:

It is. A very simple no nonsense knife design

Interesting thread Nix.I'm not much for GAW's because I believe I have too much already and there may be someone who needs the item more than myself.

This is the most interesting GAW to date so I would like to participate.

My entry into the Wild Man category will be Dick Proenneke. Many will know him from a book and later a documentary broadcast on NPTV.

Twin Lakes cabin:
On May 21, 1968, Proenneke arrived at his new place of retirement at Twin Lakes. Beforehand, he made arrangements to use a cabin on Upper Twin Lake owned by retired Navy Captain Spike Carrithers and his wife Hope of Kodiak (in whose care he had left his camper). This cabin was well-situated on the lake and close to the site which Proenneke chose for the construction of his own cabin.

My entry into the Wilderness Knife will be this David Boye drop point hunter. It's crafted from what David terms Dedritic Steel and has a handle crafted from Desert Ironwood. David wrote an interesting book on knife making.

I bought this from David in 1986. This knife has traveled with me on many, many excursions into hunting areas all across this country.

The photo for this GAW is more difficult to select.I have literally hundreds of photos from wilderness areas around this country. Most of these photos were taken before the age of digital cameras.

I chose this photo, which I copied from a pre-digital photograph, because it includes friends who accompanied us on one of our wilderness adventures. This was taken at the entrance to our friends ranch in Colorado. It is about 70 miles south and slightly east of Grand Junction. It is located at one of the public access roads in to the Gunnison National Forest.

In my mind, they don't come much more 'Wild' than Proenneke. (The title photo in post #1 is of Proenneke.)  :tu:

(There was a great book based on his journals.)

This is my go to (and only) wildernesss/camp knife. Its a gerber spine. I like it because it will be good for most things outdoor, you could baton, carve and probably prepare food. Although its not a light knife at all (im not sure of the exact weight but its pretty heavy), But for it being a full tang knife with a thick rubber grip and a nice hard plastic sheath I like it. And of course I will also carry my Leatherman Rebar  :MTO:
Im just here existing
