Scale tools - 4th opening
on: March 10, 2021, 12:29:48 AM
Hello and good night to all.

Has anybody thought of some tool for the 4th opening on the Vic scale?

I thought of putting the fire ant fire starter in place of the toothpick and move it to the place of the 4th opening, but it does not fit.

Best would be to find a fire starter that fits the tweezer place, and then buy a small tweezer for the 4th opening.

Any ideas?

I put a shortened Firefly with the head reshaped and modified to glow blue.

You could probably mod the toothpick to fit, but it would be quite a bit shorter.

Did that too. Just gotta mod/reverse the head orientation. I used epoxy and glow powder.

Pen slot. Make your own ferro rod to fit it. I think there are rods available to fit the stock slot. Again, I’d use epoxy and glow powder to form the head.

I think I posted some pics in the FireAnt thread in the SAK forum and maybe comis’ glow mod scale thread in this forum.

Post in the glow scale thread is

This is in the back tweezer slot cut open in a Champion Plus and the other is in a white Spartan PS.

Thanks, but my question was more about the 4th opening. You got T&T, pen... what's the 4th one?!

I didn't made myself clear (as usual). What I meant was "what are the 4 slots?"

1. Toothpick
2. Tweezers
3. Pen
4.  ??? (do you count the pin, under the corkscrew?!)

Ah, I see.

It's the ultra secret slot on the back scale of some (not all) SAKs. Older scales do not have the slot:

You can see it on the top left of the photo. The slot is not opened except on the Voyager et al.

Thanks! This pic illustrates it perfectly. I'll have to check my SAKs, don't remember seeing this.

  :salute:

Edit: Yup, there it is, in a translucent scale. Do regular celidor scales have this, too? Or just the translucent ones?

So, the 4th slot is a 3rd slot... why not have a 2nd slot in the other scale, to make a 5th slot? It would be less crowded.

The forth slot is meant to be used in SAKs that have the watch on the front scale. When you have the watch, there's no way to fit the tweezer, so these models come with the 4th slot open, and a shorter tweezer there.

If you have a SAK without a watch and with plus scales, the 4th slot will be closed, but its simple to open it.

Cheers

3rd back slot, 4th if you exclude the pin. Thanks again for explaining anything better than I do Reinier!

But the rear slot is for the Electronic scales, so that the short tweezer can be used there. Not sure in the exact year of introduction, but I think after 2000, when the plus scales were still ‘solid’, without all the modern reinforcing ribs found in the ‘hollow’ scales.

Reinier will explain anything I missed. 😉

But there are no electronic cellidor front scales so why the extra slot on the back?

Like anything Victorinox does, it’s about production efficiency. Both scales share the same interior injection mold. Saves on tooling costs.

That"s actually what I had typed and then deleted. Becaude I sort of doubt it. The molds can not be identical since on cellidor the slot is still closed
Oh well :)

Yeah, bad things happen when I type under or un-caffeinated.

But it does seem to me that they would only have to change the outer part of the mold. Which they’d have to do for the ESD textured electronic scales anyway.

Cosmetics. The front side uses the (normal) Tweezer slot to display the Victorinox name against it. Adding more tools to the ‘front’ scale like where the pen goes on the back would muck it up a bit. Adding a slot under the shield would be a no-no for the translucent versions.

I was tempted to open teh 4th slot on the plus scales I got recently before putting them on, but I was sure that I'd muck up the opening in some fashion  :dunno:

The 4th slot seems to use 'short' tweezers, do you all mean the ones from 58mms?

Acutally no, the short ones are different. Part number is A.3742. You can find them on eBay and they are also available in some of the replacement parts kits (here for example: https://ebay.com/itm/193973665263)

No, 58mm and 91mm tweezers are the same size at about 45mm. The short ones are about 35mm (measured using a SwissTool so give or take 2mm ;) ).

Short ones on the left. Middle one (red) is for 58mm SAKs. Note that the plastic part on the short tweezers has the same angle as the 91mm ones.

Obviously the same tweezers (58mm and 91mm) are used in 74mm, 84mm, 111mm and 130mm SAKs and also in SwissCards. And probably elsewhere too :)

Just do it. I only used a Vic Metal Saw and worked slowly, using the side walls to guide the initial cuts on each side. Test fit the tweezers before you’re done to make sure you don’t cut too far.
