Long pull Scouts: Which Brands Made Them?
on: April 26, 2021, 04:37:55 AM
I love scouts, same as I love SAKs.

I just picked up a Western Cutlery Company Scout that I have admired awhile for the long pull nail nicks on all four tools. I believe it’s a Western Model 901.

I wonder: did cutlers other than Western make scout patterns  with long pulls nicks on all the tools? It gave the Western a very striking and appealing appearance and I hope, functionality, too. I wish some contemporary cutler would emulate long pulls on all the tools of a scout pattern.

Thanks in advance for any information shared..

Looked through the pictures of my former knife collection and found several that had long pulls but as far as I can see only on the master blade. A Boker;several Imperials both 3 & 4 blade;a Seneca and several Utica.

Thanks for those names. I have not found any other makers that did all the tools long pull yet either.

But I’ve only just started looking.

Went back to re-check the pictures and found that the Western did indeed have long pulls on all four blades. Here are some pictures of it and others that only had the long pull on the master blade. Some are only 3 blades and the unusual Sears Craftsman has a clip master blade instead of the usual spear point. It will take a couple of posts so please be patient.

GEC had long pulls on their Camp knife (main blade)

Thx for the pics.

SteveC, yours with long pulls on all tools looks like a Remington. Is that correct? Any idea what time period it was made?

Based on responses so far, it looks like at least a few manufacturers got in the “long pull on all scout tools” game.

I really like the look.

I wonder what made them stop?

Possibilities:

Save on machining costs?

A change to thinner blade stock, or to a different kind of steel that could not stand that much heat from machining?

Other?

Anyway thanks all. When I get my little Western scout in the mail, I will snap pics and post.

A toast to long pulls. 🍻🥂

GEC had long pulls on their Camp knife (main blade)

We are going to have to challenge GEC’s cutler self-respect and insist they have to make another run with long pulls on EVERY tool!!!!

Heck, since it GEC who seems able to do almost anything these days, let’s challenge them to match strikes on long pulls on EVERY tool! Talk about a cool look!!

That’s a lot nicer Western than the one I bought.

Thanks for the kind words. The Boker I am not sure of but if I had to guess I would say probably the 1950's-60's. The Craftsman probably the 1970's or 80's;the curved stamp Utica ended around 1937;the Seneca circa 1932 and the Kamp King and Imperials about the same time.

And so you are!

Adding nothing can be as useful as adding something. Adding nothing provokes others to fill the silence.  :tu:

Theres something about long pulls on traditionals.
I like the Camillus #12, which has a long pull large blade and a pen blade.... and pretty much all long pulls turn my head.

I like the Scout pattern, perhaps more than the next guy... so why not combine the two?

Super Like.   :like:

The only long pull I have is on a Remington Stockman, which is a shelf queen for nostalgic reasons.

Eleven blade, you put it so much more eloquently than I did.

Thanks for weighing in.
