I've carrried a MiniChamp since the mid '90s. I did a lot of traveling for work and this SAK went with me everywhere. Great tool!

The only thing I've never liked about it was having to choose between tweezers and a toothpick. I was always flipping back and forth, depending on what I needed at the time.

So now I've solved my problem...

My first mod - the MiniChamp Plus with onboard tweezers, toothpick, and even a slot for a straight pin!

I stole the name from the other "Plus" models. The MiniChamp already had a pen. Now it has tweezers, toothpick, and pin. I haven't yet cracked how to add a corkscrew with a mini-screwdriver.   ;)

Step 1: Bought a donor Classic SD with good scales at the local junk shop for $2.

Step 2: Used a Dremel sanding tool to sand down the bottom edge of the donor front scale. I wanted the top edge to sit below the tool slot opening on the original front scale.

Step 3: Used a Dremel cutting disk to start the pin groove inside the donor scale.

Step 4: Used my SwissChamp to finish the pin groove (metal saw, knife blades, metal file).

Step 5: Used Gorilla Super Glue to attach donor scale to MiniChamp.

Step 6: Enjoy the extra capabilities!

The doubled scale ended up being 1mm wider than the pen-equiped back scale so it looks balanced.

I'm not wild about the gap on each side. I may try to fill them with something.

I never would have even thought to try this if it weren't for reading about the mods you all have done here on the forum. Thank you for the inspiration.

A few pictures attached. Let me know what you think.

I know swapping scales doesn't qualify for a Hacker Merit Badge. Does modifying scales?

I wonder at what temperature cellidor melts.  Could a pin be heated by a butane torch and plunged into the side of a scale to create its hole?

Yes, I've seen this done on a couple of videos on YouTube. I think Felix Immler did one of them, I can't remember who did the other one.

Phase 2 of the MiniChamp Plus Mod

I decided I really didn't like the gap between the layered scales so...

1. Used filler putty for plastic models to fill the gap.
2. Sanded it down with 320 sandpaper.
3. Painted it the closest red I could find among the plastic model paints at the store.

A couple of photos attached.

While I was working on it, I took the opportunity to use my Dremel to grind the tip of the nail file into an awl, following McStitchy's idea in https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,47771.msg2249311.html#msg2249311

And, not related to the SAK, I super glued a couple of spare 3/16" N52 magnets to the back of the Photon Micro-Light I keep attached to the MiniChamp.

Ready for most anything now!  Or at least the Pocket Rocket Challenge next month.   ;)

Nicely done

I've also modified a Midnight MiniChamp for fitting both toothpick and tweezers last year, but no needle (should consider maybe...)

Absolutely fantastic and clever mod Steve! :hatsoff: This morning I dug out my old MiniChamp to carry at my new job and was thinking to myself, "I wish they could find a way to incorporate the toothpick as well as the tweezers". And then I stumbled across this thread.
