I always have a rambler or classic, depending on what keys I have. Then whatever the SAK of the day is in my pocket or on my belt. The only time I'm down to one is inside the house.

I often carry two SAKs. Usually the second is a Cellidor 58mm with scissors, carried on a neck lanyard. That makes a great pairing with a knife that doesn't have them.

Lately I've been carrying my Bantam with a two-layer SAK. The Bantam is a heck of a lot of fun to carry!

Lately i have had a lot of love for the Bantam. Usually take it where i have a high chance of losing it in a social faux pas. :ahhh :ahhh

If i ever pick up/find an alox one it may live in the wallet.

Don't own a cadet but considering converting a bunch of recruits/small tinkers/two layer with circuit board to achieve similar width as a cellidor bantam.

If successful a wenger 84mm combo tool, locking blade and scissors might also be in order.

The Alox Bantam is great. Once the United States and Michigan governments repay me the money I lent them last year, I might pick up 10-12 Alox Bantams and gift them.

Two is good....   I usually carry a Rambler or Vagabond on my keyring.  In my pocket, there will most often be a Yeoman.  This combo has served me well for a couple of years now.

My standard Urban Convenience Package includes an Explorer Plus and a Manager.  The latter provides the micro phillips, and is not too scary when deployed in the presence of lily-livered persons.

Fortunately, I don't run across many such persons...but they are out there.

Often two or more:

-When I first got my Pioneer and Cadet, I carried the Pioneer in my back pocket for a primary carry and the cadet in the breast pocket of my hoodie for other tasks

-For over a year I carried  an Evowood 14 on my belt and a LE Cadet in a leather slip in my pocket and a Swisscard in my backpack

- Nowadays one of my common organiser carries is a Rebar and an Explorer with plus scales, I often drop a minichamp in the pocket with them, or more recently, a midnite manager.

Most at any one time is probably like 4 or 5, probably with other tools as well, I like to EDC a lot of gear

I have two options:

Alox Minichamp + Waiter (with added pen)
Rambler + Alox Bantam

I switch between them based on mood, 58 on the keychain, 84 in the watch pocket. I would replace the alox minichamp for alox rambler if one is available.
With any of those two combos I will feel very well prepared for urban settings.

Technically.....yes

I used to carry an Alox soldier everywhere and on my keyring a tiny mini.

Now I have a nice new Vic Farmer X alox, but my keyrings still have the Mini.

I think a more nuanced question would be: do you carry two full sized SAKS  (74mm and bigger)  and why?

74mm line actually has more in common with 58mm line than it does with 84mm+ IMO.

Not carrying them ATM, but Money Clip and ‘61 Soldier make a sweet alox combo with minimal tool redundancy.

Practically always.
What's the point of having them and not be able to use them?

Sometimes I do. Lately I've been carrying a Bantam in conjunction with a Tinker or Pioneer. Simple reason being: I like the Bantam. A lot. Carrying two larger SAKs also gives one a backup blade, or two blades for two different purposes.

If one used a particular tool every day.. all the time... then maybe one could feel justified carrying a backup. But what are the odds of any particular SAK tool breaking on a given day and leaving you tool-less for that particular job? And are you so far away from civilization or home that you can't easily replace it?

But knife blades you say! Blades break or get dull!  Well, if you use any tool a lot,  then you should be carrying a dedicated tool for that job.

So yeah, carrying a second SAK in a backup capacity makes little to no sense to me, personally.  But walking around kitted up like Batman isn't my thing. It might be yours and that's cool. Do what gives you joy. :)

Bring up another interesting query: what about carrying two full sized SAKS to complement their different/respective toolsets? What combinations would that be and why?

I’ve been pocket carrying either a Standard, Tourist, or Tinker for awhile now, and complimenting it with a belt carried SwissChamp.  I’m sure I could solely carry a three layer or an Explorer and get by, but I like the feel of a vintage two layer.   The SC rarely gets used, but I’ve got an inline phillips, scissors, “pliers”, and a bunch of other tools that will rarely get used.

I’ve carried my FarmerX now for over a year straight, it’s pretty much the perfect tool for my needs, yet there’s a little sak hanging on my keychain, and well, I can’t leave the house without it,
But what I see is if your a simple handyman (worker not the sak) your going to need lots of tools but not the expensive ones, just your basic, but if your say a carpenter, then your going to need less tools but have to bump up your tool class on specific tools like a hammer or tape measure, where the handyman can cut back on,
So yeah I love my sak, but I don’t need it everyday, I don’t need the tools everyday, if I did then I would have to put it aside and carry something that would fit, maybe a 6-1 screwdriver, or a utility knife, same goes with a multitool, yeah I carried one all the time on the job but when it came to it, pliers and other tools worked better and they were just handy for when you were in a pinch, like didn’t want to run all the way back out to the van for a tool,

When I want most of the tools that are in the Swisschamp, …

Funny, my wife just brought me a whipped cream can with a broken tab for the cap. Tried the pliers on the Troubleshooter, but not enough of the tab left to really grab what was left. Slim CO SD able to get under and pry out the tab.

…but want to break it apart in two knives, the Troubleshooter and Marlboro Outdoorsman work well enough. Substituting my Troublemaker mod(s) which just adds a Lite/in-line Phillips and Plus tools to the Troubleshooter works after dark.

I find another ‘full size’ pairing I like is just adding my new-ish ‘SBX’ serrated Bantam X mod to any other 91mm non-Combotool knife I might want to carry. The small serrated main is an awesome addition to anything else I use that doesn’t have a serrated blade. The 74mm scissors are a bit redundant as a second knife as almost everything I’d otherwise carry would have scissors in it too…as well as openers. So I could probably have as little as an 84mm alox serrated solo and find that worthwhile…albeit a bit too minimalist for me on its own.

I guess I’d want serrated mains and plus tools in ever 91mm I use. But as I said earlier in this thread the 58mm on the keychain allows me to not worry about grabbing a knife without plus tools…and the SBX does the same for the serrated blade. I can go as heavy or light as I want and have the functions I prefer with me.

I haven’t gotten around to building it yet, but a The Trail Guide with a serrated main is on the list now.

Let's say you have a lot of multitools and SAKs. It seems to me it would be more fun, and challenging, to carry a different SAK every day rather than trying to carry two SAKs, a pliers-based MT, a folder, a fixed blade, a pair of dedicated pliers, etc in some attempt to cover all your bases .

Just pick a different SAK every few days and go. See what the day brings.  *shrugs*

Yeah, I’ve done that. Casually, and in the form of MTO challenges and at times with 30 different knives for the duration.

I already ‘know’ what tools I use regularly and have suited the mods I use toward that purpose. It’s still a work in progress.

But that said, I do give the tools I don’t really like or use that often a carry once in a while. Like pliers based tools, where I still deem them too bulky for their utility for things I do. I find my main issue is that they are generally needle nose based. Ugh.
