UK friendly SOG
on: February 08, 2009, 01:48:27 PM
Dudes and dudesses (have we any dudesses....I'm fed up of writing it  :D),

OK, I am going to build a UK friendly Powerplier/Powerlock etc of some sort.  As a result of this I can not have a locking blade on it.

What tools would you use to replace the knife and saw?

Remember it has to be UK legal and easy to fit.

Fire away gang  :salute:

I'm putting together a PT-510 for my son's birthday.  I'm hoping to pull the blade and add scissors.  If there's room I'll also remove the punch down tool and add the 1/4" bit driver as well.  No pics as yet, Dennis has strapped the bits I needed to a pigeon heading this way  :tu:

Are you really wanting to do away with the knife and saw, or would you simply want to defeat the lock?  (because defeating the PowerLock lock would be easy enough)

I use my UKPK as my dedicated blade....my swiss champ has saw etc etc....I just fancy a decent pliers system (SAK's pliers are light use only) and can fill the space on the SOG with other useful kit.

Ahh, very well then, may I propose a serrated line cutter?

Flash, why not just carry around a LM Kick? They are cheap enough, and they have great drivers!  :)

That would do it.  I quite like the idea of that.

Do you get enough tension from the spring to keep the blade/tools in place OK with the lock out of commission?  This has stumped me when considering UKfying other locking knives.

Ahhh, good point. Perhaps grind the notch on a ramp, so that the tension is still there, but it doesn't "lock" open?  (hope that makes sense)

That's a clever idea Bob, but you'd need to pretty damn accurate I think?

Flash, do something bizarre, like putitng a house key on there, or a USB Flash drive or a mini LED or a mag glass or something maybe? That would be pretty cool  8)

I think you can make the vertical face on lock notch the bar pull against into a ramp so it folds under pressure, sorta like a slip joint. May take a few minutes to tune in but would make it UK legal.

Has someone got a definition of what exactly a lock knife is? And do you know if the S.A.T is legal - eg, on the SOG Blink?

SAT is legal to own yes.  Obviously the length of the blade and if it locks determines whether or not is is legal EDC without a good reason.

This is my definition....not a legal one....should be similar though :)
One that is not readibly foldable at all times. i.e. one that requires the release of a mechanism to allow the blade to fold away.

Thanks... the Blink is a tiddler so no probs there.

As for making the UK friendly SOG - take out all the scary sharp bits and replace them with a tiny Union Jack rolled up around a toothpick. Multipurpose too :D

It still locks though (I think) so it is not legal to EDC without a valid reason.
