An option I often go with is a 2 layer 91 or 84mm and something like a Classic SD or Rambler.

My go-to most days is an Explorer Plus with a Classic SD or Manager.  That pretty much covers everything for me.  A Compact alone would not make my leg tingle, largely due to the lack of a phillips as noted above.  At a minimum, I want a blade, scissors, flat driver and phillips.

Oh, I often go well over a 2 layer SAK to go along with my Rambler. I've hauling a Deluxe Tinker in my pocket for almost 2 weeks straight now - definitely overkill for my needs on most days. But I've been trying to experiment more with the pliers and, well, that ain't gonna happen if it's not in my pocket!  :D

But I often find the 2D Phillips on the can opener, to go along with the smaller 3D one on the Rambler, to be enough for the situations I normally run into. So I don't carry my Explorer that often.

I have just ordered one. I carry a Waiter Plus and a Minichamp and have done so happily for years.

I recently bought a Compact for someone for a secret Santa. I had a hard time actually posting it.🤣

:iagree: I recently acquired a Weekender, so that’s been in my pocket. But, my regular carry is Explorer and Midnite MC.

I usually only carry my Compact as a compliment to a PST.

Well..., here's my 2 cents...

Having carried the Compact for a couple of months a few years back, i feel it's a great for someone wanting a pocket knife with scissors, but completely sub-par for someone wanting a multi tool.
The combo tool sucks for most of the usability i get from the Bottle and Can opener tools, also miss the small blade and awl. I use it sometimes at home, but i don't have it on the EDC rotation anymore.
In a comparable way, i think the Compact is every bit as overrated as the Explorer for me... I'd take a Climber over them any day. If i'm going 4 layers, i'd go with the Deluxe Tinker any day
