SHOT 2024
on: January 23, 2024, 01:40:27 PM
Unfortunately we don't have any representation at SHOT this year but that doesn't mean we can't compile interesting info anyway!

To start off:

It looks like Gerber is cooking up () something interesting.

Cooking could be metaphor or literal. Is it something that's just really cool that they've been working on. Or is it something food related? Hmmmm

I followed the link given and it shows the same photo of a guy and a gal outdoors pretty much.  There is a box to sign up for email and advertising.  Lithuanian domain .lt  It is a Gerber gear site.
Best wishes.  G

Still another hour before SHOT starts, so hopefully we won't be waiting much longer!

The Bridgeline is meh for me (like they picked the least attractive way to merge "old and "new" school) but I'll probably pick up a razor or two. Always fan of barlows, and the "large medium" (or whatever you want to call the 3-7/8", '47 stockman size) is one of my favorite sizes.

I like them, but then again I like Finch knives because they're a blend of modern and traditional

I really like them too.  In fact, I think it's the only thing I have seen in the SHOT show videos that I'm definitely going to buy.

Glad to see the Vault pattern is, once again, a "real man's" knife instead of another "mini" version of a full-size pattern.  Hoping that as the year goes on, that there's a CV variant. What's strange is that this one seems to not yet have a CV version, when the past three (aka the years I paid attention to what Vault issues got cranked out) all did.

If I am not mistaken the larger Copperlock will also be coming back.  I have one and its great tho I wished they lengthened the blade a bit more since there is room in the frame to do so.

I do like the razor and will keep an eye out for the CV one.

I watched the knifentre coverage on youtube, but nothing got me excited.
There are plenty of very good products around these days and the manufacturers (that seem to be increasing)  keep producing more variety of the same. That is not a bad thing.
With knives we had the excitement of magnacut a few years ago and now this is becoming more common, in lower cost knives and multitool type knives. Button locks are also becoming very common and pivot bearings are basically expected these days.  Modern traditionals are also popular and have been for a few years now.
With multitools, the last "new" ideas I remember were the LM free consept and the Gerber centredrive, and these were unveiled a few years ago.

This thread started out with wondering about 'what Gerber was cooking up.'  It was the new Gerber ComplEAT outdoor cooking outfit.  16 pieces of cooking and service tackle that packs into a nesting drawstring bag.  It is $200 and weighs 10 pounds and a half, so it is not a back-packing piece of equipment.  Think picnics and family cookouts.  Best wishes.  Gary

It's got a lot of 5 star reviews from people who received them for free and got as far as unpacking them before writing up how great it is....

I guess I'll wait to see some reviews from people who actually used them....

I wonder if Gerber would send me something if I promised to do a 5 star review for them?  Last time I cooked anything outdoors it was plastic disposable plates and flatware.  Battered old pot on top of a Coleman propane stove.  I don't remember being unhappy with it.  Used the same stove to heat up water to wash the pot and to heat up water for a personal tidy up.
Personally I wouldn't want to wash 10 pounds and 9 ounces of equipment.  Either indoors or out.  Anybody who couldn't get by with a can of Dinty Moore beef stew and some bread needn't let me do the outdoor cooking.  Best wishes.  Gary
