Back when I was in high school, many of the girlies took a course called Home Economics.  Everyone walked to school in those days and carried clubs to fight off the megalodonts and gigabites.  Wearing bear skins.  Anyway, the idea was to teach the giggly cute half of humanity to learn to cook and sew and such things.
One of their most embarrassing class projects was to sew their own dresses.  Pants would come along after the final ice age and global warming set in.  Anyway, they all had to cut out, sew, and WEAR TO SCHOOL their creations.  There were lots of lowered heads and occasionally a solitary tear would leave a salty track on a downy cheek in humiliation and maybe a sniffle or two.
Anyway, the moron of this story is..... you don't get a home run every time you try something new.  Chances are the more you do it, the better you will get.  Friend Aztec did a pretty nice job on his leather pouch, but he doesn't stand a chance of sewing the pants pocket back on.  Best wishes.  G

I remember HomeEc, Shop Class, and Automotive Shop.  I remember hearing that the final exam for HomeEc class was to bake a cake and decorate it.  I wanted to get into Auto Shop but by the time I was allowed to, they had done away will all those classes.  Pity as I think they're definitely needed now-a-days.

They had carpentry and agriculture on the far corner of the high school campus.  That way the rest of the students wouldn't be bothered by the sound of horseshoes clanging against the metal stakes.  I think the carpentry boys actually nailed things and sawed boards or something.
I heard of schools where Home Ec was required for everyone.  Not where I went to school.  Actually, it would have been good training for anyone.  Learning to cook and wash and theoretically iron clothes could be useful.  Sew a little.  The honor of having the Home Economics classroom fell to students having the last names beginning with A, B, and C.  That was how I got into the classroom for what we called 'home room' when I was a Junior maybe?  Occasionally after roll call, we would be treated to some cookies made in the class.  All the guys ate them and asked who baked them.  Just so they would know which girls you NEVER wanted to marry.  Like a fool I tasted some of the artichoke with butter one day when it was offered to me.  My first and last.  Seems like they baked cakes as well?  If they did, I probably had some.  Who knows?
Best wishes.  G

I can just imagine the direction a conversation would take if someone suggested that home economics should be brought back. But like the various shop classes, they could greatly benefit some high-school kids. Not everyone wants to languish in an office for eight hours a day! And I could have benefited from the cooking portion of home economics. (I graduated high school in 1997, and my high school offered home economics at that time.)
