Swiss+Tech 30th anniversay edition
on: September 01, 2024, 09:40:09 AM
Swiss+Tech 30th anniversary edition #0051 of #1994
My thoughts so far.. pros and cons:
Pros:
- Packaging + booklets look great
- Certificate + unique nrs add some value
- Custom scales, damast blade, coated cutters.
Cons:
- Blatant Leatherman Heritage / garage copying
- Except for the blades and scales, it's an exact copy of the DL30 (They could have at least outfitted some premium rivets, stamped ruler markings and the brand on the plierhead/lock-tabs instead of "stainless steel".
- Quality control, mine came misaligned and some tools were stuck and tightened too much.
- THE PRICE !!!!!!! for now the only way I can justify my purchase (135$) is because I have the lowest nr available for consumers #0051. The first 50 are reserved for the brand owners.
Very few units have been sold so far. It would have been better if they capped it at 500 units or so. Also there is no official website for it. There are scattered online shops and no official source for information. It would certainly add value to the brand, if there was at least something resembling a product catalogue or information source from the manufacturers themselves.
My advise for buying: wait until singles day on AliExpress and get it heavily discounted. They probably won't run out soon.

I do like the whole wave (<<pun) of inexpensive Chinese MTs over the past several months, including the DL30.  This Swiss+tech is a nice collectable for the person so inclined.  They are US$151 on Ali Express.

Your advice on buying is duly noted, and, when I got an email advertising this tool the other day I have to say I felt much the same way.  It seemed like a lot of money for a knockoff of a tool I don't like to begin with- the Free series.

I wish Swiss Tech still made decent tools in the US.  Originally they were Swiss designed and produced in the US and I have some old Micro Technicians that were absolutely brilliant.  Then they got into the silly gadget market and started buying everything from overseas, and couldn't even be bothered making good tools for the longest time.

I appreciate that they are trying to make a comeback with decent tools, but to try and get Leatherman prices for knockoffs of Leatherman products seems silly. Especially when there are still Gerber and Victorinox tools going for a lot less, which a much more respectable pedigree.  Gerber's foray into the cheapo tool market may be something we still look down upon (Evo, Ripstop, Tread, Suspension, we are looking at you guys!) but they still made some decent stuff in the meantime, like the Shard, Artifact, Curve, MP600 and Diesel.

Sill, this one is special and as a collector (aka junkie!) there is a certain amount of appeal to it!

It is VERY cool that you got such an awesome number though!

Can't wait to get my copy. States it should arrive by September 6th. I don't even have a copy of the tool this is based off of either.

EDIT: Just checked. It is now in Toronto at the moment and should be here by Sept 4th. I am curious to see what number I got.

Tnx Grant! Ever since I was put in charge of that other multitool group on facebook, my connections/influence have gone up tenfold. Hence I was able to negotiate getting that nr51 for myself. (With great power comes great responsibility)  8)

The tool was with every available coupon during the last sale as low as 109$, I expect it to go below 90 during the singles days.
I would feel bad if I didn't share this.

I agree with your other points, but as someone already pointed out to me. A budget tool is honest as a budget tool, even if its a copy. But at the current price it just cannot be justified other than 'collector junkie' bait.

@Chako, I expect you to have a number between 62 and 80. Because you bought in the same week/batch in the same store as me.

I would also like to add that I would not have found out about this until you posted either on Facebook or here. This was truly a sleeper model that was hard to find info about it even when you knew about this. I think i may have to get the base model for my collection sometime.  :hatsoff:

It was unfortunate you had that altercation with Marek last year and left us disgruntled.
One week after that per predicament he left facebook entirely and left the whole group to me.
I've been repairing, making new contacts and expanding our influence ever since.
I got the scoop on this and most other new chinese multitools because their brand influencers and some developers/marketeers are in our group now.

He left? I might re-join if allowed. What was the group name again?

By the way, I emailed NexTorch about a handcuff key for the Pioneer. Yes they do make it but only for LE0s.

Tracking the shipment, anticipating its arrival, staring at the mailbox and walking in from the porch or mailbox with the package is a big part of the MTO Fun Continuum ("MFC").     :tu:

No matter how good they are, anything with Made in China doesn't appeal to me. They had (have?) a very long run of poor (if any) quality knock-offs and/or originals to inspire me any confidence.

This feels like a weird choice to me. When I think of Swiss+Tech multis, I think of the micro/minis. They're not as good as they used to be, but the modern ones are still decent for a small/cheap tool. Why not do a blinged out version of the classic 6 (or my favorite, the 19) in 1. Make it out of titanium and charge extra for it. I'd at least think about buying that. How many people want to pay Leatherman brand money for an off brand Charge?

I was not aware of all of their larger models...that is until I looked on AliExpress. I just haven't seen them on this side of the pond. So in retrospect, this is not that odd to me once I saw all of their larger offerings. I agree, Swiss+Tech has always been small gadgets. I have a drawer full of them.

It looks nice, but I haven't been happy with knock-off MTs.

So for $10 I could buy a Surge, and for $90 more I could get an Arc  if I pay retail.  If I get it through work or use rewards points, even less.

If I collected knock-off MTs the way I collect knock-off SAKs, I'd buy it right now.
