I found another cool hammer
on: April 11, 2025, 06:23:51 AM
A couple of years ago I found this hammer at a yard sale at some ridiculous "I don't know what I've got" kind of price, I think it was about 5 bucks.  Got it for my wife who likes a light hammer, and then kind of lost track.  It disappeared for a while, and it turned up under some stuff on her sewing table (she'd used it for one of its intended purposes, driving in snaps).  So I decided to look it up. Holy cow, those things are expensive!  Anyway, here's one of the nicer hammers for everyday use.  Titanium supposedly gives you more whack for the weight, so a ten ounce hammer should act more like a 16. I really like the handle on this one, too.  This appears to be an early model, investment cast by Ruger, and intentionally without a magnetic nail holder so it doesn't mar finished work.  Newer ones have straighter claws too. The only reference I could find for this one suggests it was one of the first ones they made.

Definitely one to be on the lookout for. My hand box mostly gets used for around the house, but it will often accompany me for whatever repairs need a lightweight, portable set of tools for jobs a multitool can't handle. Currently, my hammer is a really beat up 1980 Estwing (I think it's marked 16 oz., but it's a a few ounces lighter than my rip claw rubber handle 16 oz.--so may be a 13 oz, model) with the old style heavily curved claw (which works a thousand times better at pulling nails than rip claws--thus I'm always on the lookout for them).  I removed the rotted leather and re-did it in paracord wrap. I thought I did good when I found it for $3 at a flea market, but that was a steal!  Looking online, new ones are like $100!

Curious how well these would work. My 13 oz. Estwing delivers some pretty strong blows to be such a small hammer (which is why my 20 oz. rip got retired for the 16 oz. rip), especially when compared to my Shapleigh 13 oz.
