One step closer to a piece of local history
on: December 16, 2025, 05:09:34 PM
Some local history for you:

On September 2nd, 1998 SwissAir flight 111 coming from JFK airport in New York crashed not far from the city of Halifax.  It was actually about 8 kms offshore from the world famous Peggy's Cove, in St. Margaret's Bay, a place I have kayaked, flown drones over and driven around countless times.

All passengers and crew were killed in the incident (215 passengers, 14 crew), and is the deadliest accident in SwissAir history.

Naturally, living in the area, everyone here knows someone that was involved somehow, from fishing boats that tried to help to Coast Guard vessels that combed the area for four years, picking out wreckage... and more.

What is less well known is that SwissAir then gave SAKs to every person that had been involved, as a thank you for their efforts.  I have been trying to get one of these SAKs for years, but the people that own them don't give them up easily, and nor do their families, knowing what was done to get them.

Last month a SAK collecting friend of mine who lives on the opposite side of the province found one in an antique store and told me about it.  For some reason he was unable to get it at the time, but as of today, he has managed to obtain it for me.  I don't know when it will actually be in my hands, but at least today I am one step closer to owning this piece of local history.

The genesis of that piece of history is sure sad, but I'm glad you've sourced one.

:hatsoff:  thank you for the reminder.

It truly was a tragedy, and was not aware of the efforts involved as well as gratitude that was extended.

I hope closure was given to awl the families that lost loved ones as result of the tragedy.

We tend to forget eventually when events of this nature occur, no matter the reason.

Well, it is well remembered here as well.  I have been to the memorial and I have lots of photos of it.  When I get the knife in hand I will go to the memorial here and get some photos of the two together for you.

Definitely a tragedy, but good that you can help preserve a little piece of it for posterity.

I remember the story breaking on CNN.

Says a lot for Swissair, and the Swiss mind set to make such a gesture.  I'm glad you've get one
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Wow - I don't remember that crash - But that was not a good year for me.

And what a tragic event

Were the SAKs made especially for that purpose - Or were they regular SwissAir promotional models
Either way you know and we know, that it is a special one, if it was obtained in Canada

Hey and what a great friend on the lookout for you

Interesting question. Huntsman.

FolderBeholder’s shared in the CLASSIC challenge thread a SwissAir swag given to 1st class passengers in a special box. A CLASSIC with scales imprinted as the side view of a SwiissAir plane with windows.

Phone the reply and clip the picture

Those Swiss have funny ideas on air security    :o

I thought it was pretty strange to go through security and screening at Zurich* airport, to come across shops in the departure area selling SAKs!!  ..... Not that I was disappointed BTW - and I even bought a couple.    :tu:    :tu:
But now they are handing them out on planes ..... Love it  :climber:
Although from that box it could have been pre 9/11
You should never be without a SAK!!
* Interesting fact: Why was I in Zurich airport?  .... I was on my way to a UK MTo meet a few years ago!    :multi:

PS @LC and FB - I love that Classic that is the side of an airplane.
