Ah! I thought the S stood for Scissors, which mine has. I reckon its a standard then.

Yep, that's the standard. I have an "S" but wound up missing the scissors too much. I always hear good things about the "useless" knife. Everyone says "just use it, it's better than you think". Problem is I never had a reason to use it. Couple times I tried it, I gave up and used the spearpoint instead. I'm sure if it's the only blade you have, like on your standard model it'll work out fine. I honestly have never had any problems using it, and it does work quite well, but when I have the better spearpoint available I just never saw the point in getting used to it.

Am I correct in thinking the non-spearpoint knife found on the original can work well as a safety knife. What I mean by this is that it has no pointy tip, and it has serrations, allowing you to cut with minimal slicing motion, and avoid stabbing the thing you are trying to cut free?

+1  Although I've decided I need the less bulky sheath option to fully enjoy carrying mine, and leave the ratchet set at home.

I did have a Spirit with the slimmer sheath and I remember it as being a great deal less bulky. I should think the ratchet carry adds about 10mm which doesen't sound like much but you definitely notice it, it's intrusive   I have the same problem with my Swisstool too

I think the ratchet impedimentia is better confined to a coat pocket or man bag .

Just got first my first spirit today, courtesy of a ebay seller that Raukodur mentioned :) It's smaller than I thought it would be but very, very nice. Now I see why they're so highly rated :D

I'm glad you like it Craig. Pretty much all the capability of the Swisstool in a smaller package. Having said that ST ownership is mandatory  :D ;)

On the ratchet subject, I was wondering: How thick is the Spirit and Ratchet/bits combined, compared to a Swisstool by itself?
