Yes the crazy mod fest continues!

I'm still working through a back log of custom requests. I've only been posting ones that were different than standard ones to this thread though.  I didn't see the point in posting a bunch of the same mods.

I said I wouldn't go above 4 layers, but I did anyway. :D  I've been calling this a big boy farmer.

I put both saws in the same layer since it seemed silly to put a spacer between two such thin layers.  It works fine so I'm happy.  There is a 0.005 phosphor bronze washer between the tools though.

Cheers!

The Phillips driver opposite the two opener tools in one layer is quickly becoming the newest popular request.  I really like it.  Here it is again in green scales and c260 cartridge brass liners.

Wow, another stunner!

Is this mod possible with something else instead of the awl? Maybe a small blade? Anything else?

Regards, Jon.

Great job, keep it up!!

It's possible with anything that's available in single layered SAKs.

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+93mm+1+Layer+Models

The electricians blade would be easiest to get from a Pioneer Apprentice. The small nail file isn't that easy as no 91 or 93 mm SAK has them and the one from 84mm SAKs sits too low. Maybe the one from a 85mm Wenger would work.

Oh for sure ya, any of the small blades would fit in the awl spot, electrician, pruner or small spear point.  I 'think' i could put a cadet nail file on if I used my custom spring so I could make the spring end thicker.  It sits too low if I use a regular blade spring.  Well it works, but the nail nick is partially hidden, same thing if I try an 84mm combo tool there.

So if you used one of your custom springs would it rise the nail nick higher then the scale? If so that would be a perfect combo! JR

Yep I think so at least.  I was going to try it to be able to use combo tools from 84s, so it would work for the nail file too, I just have to try it.

I always wondered, why torx screws? I know a lot of knifemakers use it but wouldn't a phillips or flat head screwdriver be more easily serviceable? I mean you could tighten a SAK with a SAK :ahhh

I think both looks, and that you can get more torque on a torx. For a pattern of the same radius, you hve 6 points of contact vs 4.  I like the look of the torx over philips too.  Other than that the most plain answer is that, that is what all the knife supply stores sell... so thats what i use. :D

Today's project was a simple two layer. Pruner/blade with scissors.  It's a nice little knife. :D

The idea of putting the Philips opposite of the openers is truly genius.  :salute:

Question, though, it looks as though there has to be a layer between them and the blade layer to access the bottle opener nail nick.  Is this correct?  If so, does it have to be scissors, or would a wood saw still allow access to the bottle opener nick.

I'm also curious, does not having the bottle opener up against the liner make it weaker?  As in, it would take less prying force to make something break?

I've got the mod lust a-brewin'    :gimme:

No the nail nick sticks up high enough it shouldn't matter what the middle layer is, a saw should work fine.

I would think it would be stronger this way.  The prying tool between a liner and a steel tool, instead of a liner and a soft aluminum scale.  The steel pivots I use are stronger than brass as well.

I mean no offense to your genius work but I personally prefer rivets.  In my past, I've had problems with screws backing out of knives becomming lost.  This is, of course, I were provided with an extra set of torx screws...

Ive done a few rivet jobs and they are ok, but I really like to be able to take knives apart to clean them proper, thats the biggest advantage for me.  As far as screws backing out, no chance with red loctite.  They dont move unless you want them too.

Here is the marlin spike mod all done up with brass liners and a scissors layer added.  I still love brass every time I use it.  I think it has a warm look and just a touch of color.

This is the first time I ever put an awl in place of the can opener, but the customer wanted the awl still.  At first I thought it wasn't going to work as it hit the cap lifter, but I ended up bending the cap lifter the other way, so the opposite side is flat.  Usually the normal flat side being flat up against the scale, but in the way of the awl.  I didn't think it would bend nicely, but it did after all and it fits perfect.  That was a pleasant surprise, as my first mod attempt was to shorten and regrind the awl, but it looked awful so I needed a plan B.

Cheers
