Adventure Sunday- this time on a Saturday!
on: November 02, 2014, 03:57:03 AM
Usually we post our Adventure Sunday write up in the Outdoor forum, but as this one was indoors I felt it might be better in the Break Room.  The weather sucked today so we decided to try something other than kayaking- something that we had been wanting to do for a while but put off while the decent weather lasted.

Yup, we went to a range.  :D

Megan had never fired a real gun before, although she is well on her way to getting her firearms license, so we decided to give it a shot.  As some of you may remember, I had been coaching her previously with both Softair and pellet guns so she is no slouch when it comes to safety, stance, aiming and breathing.

There were several guns available to rent, but having never fired one before Megan had no preference.  I suggested she start off with a .22 so she could get used to recoil before trying something more substantial, and she wanted to try a shotgun and a 9mm as well.  I wasn't going to complain, that's for sure, considering we were going to split a box of ammo for each.  :D

After a brief safety and instructional course we put on eyes and ears and went off to the business section of the range with a .22 SIG 1911, a 9mm Beretta 92 A1 and a .410 shotgun that I am sure was a Mossburg but I can't for the life of me recall the model.

We started off with the .410 which for some reason would only accept two shells at a time, which meant a lot of reloading.  I have to say, neither of us was all that impressed with it.  Megan found it uncomfortable to shoot, and I felt it was a little loud with more recoil than was necessary for such a small gun.  The noise might have been the result of shooting it indoors, but the recoil I felt was way more than made sense on a .410.

After we put a few shells down range the RO got kind of annoyed at how much time we were wasting reloading and decided to try and figure out why we could only load two shells into it, so we switched to the .22 while they fiddled with the Mossburg.

I took a buttload of photos trying to get one with a muzzle flash, and I was successful once.   :ahhh

Sharp eyed members will note the small Raker fixed blade on my belt.

It's no secret that I like the .22.  Yes I know it has no stopping power, blah blah blah.  I like a .22 because it is light, ammo is cheap and there's almost no recoil, meaning more rounds out the end faster and more accurately.  Of course, maybe I like a .22 a little too much....   :ahhh

After we'd polished off the .22 ammo it was back to the .410, and after a few head shots our little paper dude wasn't looking too happy.  But then I'm sure if someone unloaded a whole box of bird shot into my face I might not be all that pleased either!

When the .410 box ran dry we switched to the 9mm, which turned out to be Megan's favorite of the day.  She polished off most of the 9mm ammo, barely letting me have a try with it, but that's ok, because Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and it goes double if she's armed!  Eventually I did get to squeeze off a few rounds, and while I thought it was an ok gun overall, I really didn't like the trigger setup on this one.  The first 9/10ths of the trigger pull was dead with nothing to it.  I thought the gun was jammed as I was pulling the trigger what seemed like all the way back but nothing was coming out the end.  Turns out all that travel was just to get to the point where the magic happens, which seemed like an awful waste to me.

In the end though I did manage to get some lead down range and mostly in the ten ring.  Given that this was Megan's first time with a pistol she put most of her rounds in the ten ring at ten meters too, which was amazing for her first time out.  Megan is not someone to mess with, that's for sure!   :ahhh

All in all we had a great time and Megan even made a new friend!

Apparently hanging out with us isn't as fun as it seems. We invited Derek along since we were playing in his neighborhood but he blew us off for something better.

That's what i want pictures of!  :P

Hanging out with the inlaws for a birthday definitely was NOT better!!

I really wanted to go, but we had too much on the go.  Getting to see a Moosehead game in the big skybox with all I could eat and drink did help make up for me missing this though :D

We used to be neighbours with the guy that owns the place.  Even though it's literally just down the road, I've yet to stop in.

Megan went to the Moosehead game last night too.  You two seem to go to a lot of effort to be close without actually meeting!

This one is easy. Glock 17.

If you liked the other 9mm you will love this one. Light recoil easy trigger to get use to and a lot of bullets loaded at one time.
