Pawn Shop Finds
on: February 17, 2016, 10:37:43 PM
I decided to venture out for a haircut today, which lead from one thing to another and to another, the way these simple tasks often do.

On my travels I passed a pawn shop that I have often passed but never went into, largely because of a complete lack of parking available.  Well, since I am unable to drive at the moment and am dependent on mass transit, parking wasn't an issue for me today and I went in.

After finding the glass case where they keep multitools I found they had a reasonable selection of interesting, gummed up and broken toys.  There were the usual pieces of junk, and lots of them, but I found these three and decided to liberate them.

There was a typical Ganzo type as well, an overpriced Geber Crucial and what appeared to perhaps be a Bear Jaws 155 but was so broken and dirty I decided wasn't worthwhile.

First up is a Victorinox Huntsman- it was a bit pricey for a used, gummed up Huntsman with what I assume is a bonus freelance pharmaceutical related substance still on the small blade, but it put me in mind of Mercury's $20 Challenge so I decided to take it.  The tools all seem to be intact but there's little to no snap to it.  A good cleaning should sort that out.  The scales are also broken but as I'm not usually a fan of translucent scales anyway that's not too much of an issue for me- besides, I have more than a few extra scales kicking around so it's not a big deal to swap them out.  For $20 I'm considering it a good enough deal.

Next up is a Wenger S557, which is one of my favorite Wenger models- and for $10, how could one go wrong?  :D

Unfortunately this one has some issues with the toothpick and tweezers having been rammed in the wrong spots and the heads broken off.  The tools are also pretty gummed up, but a new set of scales and a good cleaning should bring this one back nicely as well.

The cheapest member of the group is also the black sheep, despite being orange.  :D

Some time ago I was looking for suggestions for a new kayak knife and the CRKT Bear Claw was one of the options I discussed.  Well, I have been tempted on many occasions to buy it, but I haven't, at least until now.  With a price tag of $8 for a knife that is a bit dirty but has no chips in the edge, no missing serrations, not even a scratch on the blade, how could I pass that up?  I'll clean it up as well and add it to my kayak gear for any excursions this summer.  Since I'm moving to a new place I won't know what is in store for me and so I am thinking of stepping up my safety gear just a bit.

That's it for today- I don't think it was a bad haul for $40- which is cheaper than the price of just the Bear Claw by itself if I was to buy it locally so all in all I am not too upset!

557 is a great SAK.  I also like the looks of the Bear Claw.  Nice scores all around.

Nice haul. On the rare occasion any of the pawn shops I've been in had a SAK, they generally wanted retail for a beat-up piece of crap.

Your excursion into a pawn shop makes me think I might be missing an untapped source for SAK's and MT's.

You don't need my approval for your purchases but you did well Grant. That Bear Claw looks like an especially capable cutting tool.

No,  I decided to splurge.  Life is cheap when you don't leave the house.

I've been meaning to make the pawn shop rounds for a while but there have always been other things getting in the way.

Nice  :tu: Reminded me to do my rounds.

From what I heard the nicer items gets sold in the back room and will never make it to the display stands. A pawn shop owner I met on a trip told me that.

You guys are lucky. The Salvation Army type thrift shops around here don't sell mt's and sak's.

As much of a hardcore SAK enthusiast as I am, if I'm to be honest I'm happier about the Bear Claw than I am either of the SAKs.  I have wanted a Bear Claw and already had both of these SAKs (multiples in fact), so I guess I just can't get as excited about them.  Plus, the Bear Claw was the cheapest, so that is even more exciting.  :D

I used a Mr Clean Magic Eraser to scrub most of the black stuff off the handle, and while it doesn't exactly look brand new, it is more than close enough for my needs!

What's screw on the blade for Grant? Does it act as a keep once it's in the sheath?

You'd be suprised at the stuff in pawn shops. One of the more interesting things taking up space in one of my local shops is a China tea set.

Keep in mind inaddition to outright buying stuff, pawn shops loan money with stuff as collateral. I know a couple people personally who pawned sentimental and valuable stuff with the intention of paying the loan off. Then they get in more money trouble.... and the next thing you know, your brother in law is buying back his precious guitar for 4x what he pawned it for.

Agreed.  Pawn shops have all manner of interesting things in them, and the staff often knows a little bit about everything, but not a lot about anything.

If anyone wants a good deal on a Nintendo Wii, there are a dozen or so of them there- send me a PM!  :P

It's also a good place to go for watches and old militaria.

I had a good trawl round a number of Pawn Shops in Vegas a couple of years ago, plenty of electronics and jewellery but not much else. It's great to see a nice score like this.
