Bought a Ti..it needs a replacement saw badly.
on: April 10, 2009, 08:05:21 PM
I bought a Charge Ti off Ebay and received it in the mail Tuesday.  It was used but after a good cleaning and some screw tightening it is actually in very good shape.  I really like it, I prefer not having the crimper on the pliers like the TTi.

There is one problem with it, the saw is absolutely worn out, you can run your finger up and down it with pressure and it won't even cut.  I think it's previous owner tried to use it as a hacksaw and cut metal with it.

Am I going to be able to find a new replacement for that blade? Failing that what are the odds of finding a used replacement blade?

I have a spare Wave with a good saw blade but I don't want to cannibalize it unless I have to.

What if you took the blade of your spare Wave, it's a spare anyways. Then, maybe you could send the spare Wave for warranty, then you will be able to EDC your Ti..

I prefer not having the crimpers as well.. That's why I put a standard LM plierhead on my EDC TTi!

You can try sharpen the saw. Lay it flat on its side on stone and sharpen with edge trailing for both side, or use a small diamond file to work each teeth individually. From what you said you can't make it any worse.

a needle file (extra slim) for hand saw sharpening is what I used to resharpen my saw on my Supertool :tu:

you have to go with the taper of the saw with the file for each tooth it takes a few minutes but once you get going it's not that bad :D

of course your saw may be beyond repair ::) could we see a pic and that might be able to tell me if it can be sharpened :tu:

Probably not a good idea to send a tool in for warranty that has been disassembled :-\

Here are the crime scene photos.  I believe in using a multi wherever it is useful but this was just abuse.

See exhibit A and B below.

True enough, but if you were careful; and you applied locktite- it would be hard for them to know!

Try sharping/shaping it again with a saw file I think it might work.

Well, at this point I'm going to go with the sharpening route.  The easy route would have been to replace the blade but that's just not the best way to go, nor is it the most practical.

Normally I sharpen all my own blades (knives, chainsaws, axes, mower blades) but this one seemed really far gone.  I guess I won't know until I try.

Now I just need to find a saw file as Duckman mentioned.

Thanks Guys.

Ok I picked up a precision file set at Home Depot for $10(with tax) and sharpened my Charges saw blade.
The file set is a nice set for the money, it comes with a handle and a carry pouch.  I couldn't find a file specifically for saw sharpening so I decided to settle for the precision file kit that had a small triangular file that looked like it would fit the bill.

The filing process was quite easy, I put about 20 minutes of labor into the actual filing.  The results were night and day.  The saw feels very sharp now and actually bites into wood when you cut with it.

After taking some macro pictures of it I can see that the triangle file I used was not quite the right angle for this but it was good enough to make the saw blade useful again.

I'm happy with the reults.  Thanks for the suggestion Duckman.

A Nicholson brand needle file (extra slim) for hand saw sharpening would/might  possibly bring it back to factory taper :tu: you can usually find them at a hardware store :)
