Any thoughts on the Leatherman h500?
on: April 11, 2009, 11:03:15 PM
I want a fold out knife that I can clip to the strap of my bag, so I don't have to root around for my SAK when I just need to open a package.  I'd like to pay less than $50 for it, and would prefer it just be a knife.  (The more tools on the knife, the harder it is to justify buying another MT.)  The Leatherman h500 looks like what I want.  It's about $37, the nylon pouch likely has a belt clip to hook on my strap, and it's just a knife.

Has anyone had any experience with it?  Is there a comparable model from another company?  Thanks!

My experience with the first generation of leatherman knives is that the fit and finish isn't quite on par with other knife companies yet. If you just want a knife, take a look at spyderco tenacious, it's about $32, better steel, and better fit&finish than first gen leatherman knives.

I have a Leatherman Crater C301 I think and its a knife, pocket clip, and foldout biner, that I like a lot.  I think Target has them for 22.00 and they are very solid with a nice tight lock up.  They open very smoothly as well because they have bronze washers like the Charge series has.

I went with the c301.  Got it for about $17 on eBay.  It just came today, and so far it's working nicely.  You're spot-on, though, it opens very nicely.
