Starting a little project.
on: April 13, 2009, 06:40:03 AM
So I've been keeping my eyes open for a 'Skoolie' around here for going to music festivals with my girl. We found one last week and took a look at it earlier today. Gotta say I was pretty impressed with the condition of it. Buddy did a good job making it a 'party bus' for him and his pals to drive to the hills and links in, so there's no bunks in it right now. But it's done so well I don't think it'll be hard to set-up something for us. Any one here ever done anything like this?

Getting it for 1000$. It's a 65 fargo body, it's got a rebuilt 318 dodge already, take a look at the exhaust. Started up no problem, idles pretty good, I'll be going out this week to take her for a spin with a buddy of mine. I have some pics that I took, I'll post them tomorrow.

She ain't quiet that's for sure.. It'll be interesting to see what she'll sound like at highway speeds. Buddy says she does DID 70MPH no problem... she's been parked the last 10 years.

I have always wanted to try something like that!  I can't wait to see what you do with it, what the guts look like etc!  It'll be great to see a classic machine like that rebuilt!

I did a similar thing with a long body school bus we purchased from the county for  US$1.00 for a mobile command post for the Fire Department.

A lot of work - ripped everything out and replaced it with radio console, desk, tables and 2 bunk beds. Did not put in a toilet but did put a water faucet and sink ( for making coffee ) and a HD microwave oven.
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

I think old school buses are very cool. But be sure to check the brakes out. It's one thing to be able to get something running, but you will eventually need to make it stop as well. Probably has old drum brakes which should be pretty easy to check. Also, check the rims to see if they are the old split rims (I can't tell from the pictures) as some places won't touch those anymore.

Looks like a very cool project though.

Built one for hunting a few years back. Set it up with a kitchen and 4 bunks. The "couch" folded out into a bed and one of the guys that went always slept on a cot. Keep 6 guys hunting in southern ohio for a week pretty well set. Then my family bought land down there so we built a cabin.

We also have them around town here for Party buses for weddings and such...they have sound systems and coolers and people rent them to go from bar to bar and party without the risk of driving drunk
